I have been planning a new heavy displacement sailboat using NiFe batteries as ballast. I may need to add up to 1000 pounds but the batteries should provide most of the weight in a widened full keel.

Any keel that has an outer shell which is filled with lead or iron pigs or shot could have part of that filling replaced with batteries.
I think salt water batteries would be very interesting in this application. Maybe they'd work in place of a water ballast tank if the battery was designed correctly. Other batteries could also benefit from being below the waterline (if sealed) because they could be cooled by sea water passing by the keel.
