[Electric Boats] An Interesting New Electric launch

 

Cal Drake just sent me some photos of his little electric launch of his
own design, Surprise, being tested on Dexter Lake, southeast of Eugene,
Oregon, back in September. Cal was inspired by Phil Bolger's Sneakeasy
and Lake Launch outboard motorboats. He used a 24V dual-pod bolt-on
trolling motor for power, with four group 29 lead/acid batteries in two
banks.

RE: [Electric Boats] Battery choices

 

I know most of you guys are on a budget as well as I but for the $$ the LiPo4's are the best way to handle your battery needs. I went from 12 Northstar 200AH batteries at a cost of close to $700 ea. ($8400) to 48 CALB LiPo4's 180ah at $13k but you got to look at a number of things in the long run.

No watering system needed

I went from 1800lbs to 550lbs in weight  

Close to double my run time, you can run them down to 10% rather than the standard 50%

Though I had the space to put them all together in one location dealing with a battery that is 3"x5"x10" (roughly) allows for a lot of options as to where you want to put them

A life expectancy based on cycles of 5000 full charge to discharge. I estimate they will last me a minimum of 20 years.

No self-discharge do to just sitting there

Yes I have a very good BMS system but even that wasn't but around $700 and also a monitoring system that shows me the state of charge of each battery but I couldn't be happier with the system and how it operates. Just don't throw out the idea do to cost. Over the long run it works out to be cheaper in my opinion.

Putting them in the old diesel tank location is exactly what I plan to do. Well really don't have any other option for location. Without losing needed locker space. The current tank platform is 22in X 27in and 14in tall, I can extend that 27in to 42in and just be over where the prop enters the hull. For the GC2 batteries it should just fit.

My batteries are located where the fuel tank used to be. From top of battery to bottom of cockpit deck there's maybe 5". In my situation felt I didn't have much choice but to spring for the watering system. Bums me out cause I originally wanted to put a spare 20 gallon water tank in that area.

I have a 3.75 Kw golf cart motor which has a very well engineered addition in the form of a direct connection to prop shaft. I was going to fit it to a 28' Islander but I became ill, heart attack, so I sold the boat. I also have a project catamaran, 30 ' Ground Effect. dougkay8@gmail.com

So it boils down to is it worth it to double the cost to gain those extra 47ah? The normal usage for the SBS 190F is UPSs in telecom, do you think they are unsuitable for an electric boat application?

UPS batteries are designed for spending most of their life being float charged with only the occasional cycling when called to provide backup power. I gather they won't like being cycled all the time in a traction application.

My thoughts for what it is worth is the 15 kw motor is far more power than you can utilize but should easily take you to hull speed at light load. I had a 23 foot well craft cruiser (aprox 6000 lbs). At idle (600 RPM) the boat wanted to go 5 MPH with noticeable bow rise (hull speed +). I installed 2 X 50 lb thrust trolling motors for maneuvering (never intended as main power) and got good low speed thrust with a max speed of 3 MPH. Wild guess 1 to 1 1/2 kw. This suggested that gearing the input rpm of the outdrive to 800 rpm would give it a high top speed and power to fight wind and current without wasting power trying to get on plane. Mine required all 250 hp gas to get up. Use your experience with idle RPM and MPH to get your own numbers. Remember to remove the water pump impeller. I don't think there is a huge disadvantage to running a 15 kw motor at 5kw load, with higher RPM for cooler running. The only disadvantage I see with this type of hull is efficiency for battery range but I don't know if anyone has measured this. A previous poster extended the aft portion of his planing boat hull to resemble a more displacement like form which might help. I was planning to try this with a 5kw install but got a lifeboat hull instead and am working on this. My 27 foot lifeboat has less floor space than my 23 foot cruiser. Sailboat hulls have even less internal space per foot and I have read tend to be a little tippy initially but are more stable leaned over. I was very happy with the electric driving the cruiser and would not discourage your project. It would be nice to get some range/power requirement data for small converted cruisers.

I check mine about every two weeks when I am home. I check voltage, electrolyte level, and specific gravity. Most times I find that there is no need to add water. When I am at sea (on a ship) I am often gone for several months but so far I have never came home and found plates exposed above the electrolyte level. I water manually using a turkey baster or an old hydrometer with the floaty thing removed. After an equalization charge I always check the level, and generally have to add water to each cell.

I have no experience with any auto watering systems. Mine are easily accessed. I built an enclosure and lid out of 3/4" plywood and 2x6 contoured to fit the curved cabin sole, They are located directly under the companionway hatch and serve as a step or seat. I lift the lid, and there they are, ready to be checked. I had other options for tucking them away out of sight but discarded them in favor of easy access. I will be adding a second bank of golf cart batteries forward, after I add my solar panel canopy.

Watering the batteries was one of the reasons I went with Trojans, their hydrolink?? watering system. Stick the hose in a bottle of distilled water & pump the bulb until firm. Pretty painless & simple. Cost $200.00

How often are you refilling the batteries? Getting access to
fill will be pretty difficult and the cheapest auto watering
system for a 48v system I found was close to $400. Which is
why I was leaning towards the sealed. I'd really like to
use those 190F I know

they get used in pretty extreme environments temperature
wise, but as you said not sure if they've been used in a
mobile situation. The whole reason I was asking for

Have you considered 8 6v 220ah GC-2 golf cart batteries?
I got mine from Sams Club for $85 each, still going strong
going on 4 years. They seem to be a really rugged battery,
and the form factor works nicely for me. Much easier to
handle than 8D or 4D. I

often take mine down to 50% and I had to go down to about
30% a couple of times, but they keep chugging along and no
apparent loss of capacity yet. I equalize every 6 months or
so with a 62v charge to the whole bank though this year I
plan to switch to equalizing

individually.





While I am totally unfamiliar with the SBS 190F, I think
that a battery designed to be jarred, shaken, stirred,
vibrated, bumped, moved, jolted, sloshed and banged as well
as very deeply discharged (for flooded lead acid cells,
anyway) is likely to be better

as a boat battery than something designed to sit in an
office and seldom actually be used. Just guessing.







8Ds are popular, and I considered them but decided that golf
cart batts were a better bang for the buck, and a lot more
convenient. You might also think about L-16 size batteries
if you want high capacity. Trojan makes one that is I think
420ah at 6v. (It looks

kinda heavy!)
