One possible solution to start creating the need to move the infrastructure forward, bring the price of the technology down and all the other little good things we would like to see happen, is for the majority of homeowners in the US to make their "daily driver" an all electric vehicle. Most folks daily commutes fit easily within a single charge. They should make cars with 30kWh usable packs. That's plenty and it will make the cars more affordable. I referred to homeowners being the best candidate because there's nothing like just pulling your car into the garage when you get home and it's recharged and ready for you in the morning. Most homeowners typically have a second larger vehicle for long trips or hauling.
My view is based on the fact that I use an electric car as a commuter every day. I used to have an SUV, but my daughter wrecked it, so now I'm down to just the electric car. No problem. I'm not in a big hurry to replace it.
Electric cars don't have to be expensive either. There are plenty of lightly used Nissan Leaf's out there, typically a year or two old, low mileage, with tons of life left in them for $16,000 all day long. Why not do that?
There are over 86 million homeowners in the US. The total number of new cars sold last year were 17.55 million. Can you imagine if just half of the homeowners in the US decided there next daily driver needed to be electric? Oh how things would be different. What amazing power we all have as a consumer.
The Marine Industry will take much longer, because power boats require so much more continuous power then cars do. Until then, the same mentality should apply to daysailers, dinghies and other small water craft designed for low speed and limited use. A 30kWh battery pack makes for a nice long day when it's powering a 3-5kw motor.
