It makes sense, efficiency wise, to run the largest prop you can, while maintaining the optimal prop clearance with the hull. What I don't understand is why no one is advocating varying the pitch to get the desired cruise rpm. This is the way it is done with gas outboards, diesel/gas inboards and with airplanes and helicopters. I have never heard of someone changing the prop diameter to gain rpm. In all the boats, airplanes and helicopters I have worked on, a gear drive is added for one reason: To allow running a propeller with a larger diameter to gain efficiency and thrust. RPM is regulated by pitch.
