One correction: Current prop is 17 x 10. It seemed fine with the Volvo 35hp tho I don't know specifics about torque or gearing. It is another slower, torquier engine tho. We have to switch from LH to RH direction so can't use the old prop. I'm sure it's risky to try a bigger prop, and certainly without accurate measurements. I'll be diving the hull within a week and will take a ruler with me.
THE guru on this boat just told me in an email that the feathering prop would be more efficient because of being able to fine-tune the pitch and because it had the same pitch throughout it's radius, i.e. no twist. Scratch one guru--on props anyway. I'm highly doubtful that tweaking the pitch precisely will make up for the *lack* of twist in the prop. I had forgotten about that and had only been thinking about the inefficiency of the flat airfoil. I'm sure the feathering is better for sailing and the conventional prop better for motoring. What's best all-around is another question. Maybe folding prop would be better, but there isn't room for it, given the aperture.
