Using 24v panels to charge 12 batteries does not make sense. Two panels the same size, same construction put out the same wattage. The 24v panel puts out half the amps as the same size 12v panel. 
If you use a 24v panel to charge a 12v battery, the charge controller will dump the extra power to limit the charging voltage that the battery is exposed to. Roughly the 24v panel will provide about 60% of the charging capability of the 12v panel.

There was a recent post referencing 24V solar panels that got my curiosity up.
So it looks like it's possible to buy 100W 24V panels for under $200.

I then took a look at a MTTP charge controller for 12/24V.

Though it looked like one of the charge controllers I looked at had a 20V max input voltage for charging a 12V bank.  That seemed a little low.

I had actually already started wondering if the norm was to use 24V solar arrays, run it through a controller, and use it to charge a 12V battery bank.  The idea being that a 24V array may not always put out 24V, but would hopefully put out enough to charge a 12V bank for a much broader range of time, and using a charge controller, it would be no problem.

Forgive my ignorance of solar systems - but would it make sense to use a 24V panel with a 12V battery?
