Re: [Electric Boats] convert outboard for generating power ... (and backup propulsion ?)

Djeeke, I've been working on this regen thing for quite a long time, sometimes making a little progress.   I picked up a hydo generator at a pawn shop the other day that may add some good testing to my set up...   This generator looks just like an outboard motor  but has the possibility of putting a large prop on with out any modifications..   This means I can test on the back of my aluminum fishing boat with my 8hp and gps, get some good numbers and change props easy...    I like it and wish I had another one, it would make a perfect electric outboard conversion...  Dave K

Subject: [Electric Boats] convert outboard for generating power ... (and backup propulsion ?)

I have an unused outboard bracket on my transom...
(probably used by one of the former owners to hook up his dinghy outboard so he could use it as a backup engine)

In the thinking process of converting to electric I am also considering all possibilities of generating power... Solar, wind, and generators, including the trailing generators...

I have seen a few people converting an outboard to an electrical outboard, which seems to give some decent results and the setup does not look too difficult as a diy project...

Now, has anybody ever considered installing a generator in an outboard to generate more electricity? To me this seems a lot easier solution than towing a propellor behind my boat... I could easily have the 'outboard generator' sitting on that bracket and lower it in the water when I need a few more amps to recharge my batteries...

My next question would be what I could use ? Easiest might be a simple automotive alternator...

But while it's sitting there installed on the boat, it might be a good idea to be able to actually use the system as an emergency backup propulsion !

I know alternators can be used as motors but I have no clue about efficiency and maybe the stain of using it as a motor will destroy the bearings so it might be better to install another type of motor and use the regen capability...

What do you guys think ?

Djeeke
