Just lurking and learning here. I'm not convinced converting my Ericson 27 that cruises Lake Superior is in my future. More likely a second vessel might be a small launch to travel the shoreline when things are flat. Batteries would likely be FLA or AGM to start, but wonder what should be done for our seven month layup. We get the yearly discussions every fall in the marina about how to deal with just our two batteries. Some take them home; some leave them right where they are. I used to take them home, but that was too much hassle. I can't quite just leave them, so put them in an unheated shed (on the grid) just so I can check them two or three times during the winter. When I do put a charger on each one during the winter, the fully charged LED flashes almost immediately. So am I wasting my time even taking them out of the boat? And if there will be a few more of these batteries in my future, this question becomes more important.
Are the temperatures of a northern Wisconsin winter keeping the self-discharge to a minimum? Or is the temperature of the battery and the charger not providing a true condition? How do the E-boaters in the northern latitudes handle this? Thanks for any input.
