Hi all, I am converting a Merc 9.8 two stroke to electric with a MARS brushless 6HP motor. I came across a suppliers site in a recent post that had good info on the MARS motor. It says that the MARS is configured to run CCW, that is the fan is designed to pull air through the motor when it is running in that direction. Is CCW the same direction as the original 2 stroke, or do they run CW? On this Merc, if I turn the shaft CCW the gears skip if it is in forward, so it can not be driven in reverse when in forward gear. Of course when I turn the motor upside down to mount it on the outboard shaft then motor CCW turns the shaft CW, so it seems I might be ok. Apparently there is a special fan for running the motor CW if I needed it. Is the MARS CCW specd looking at the front of the motor? Also, on the outboard the prop will run either direction without skipping when it is shifted into reverse. Could I just leave it in reverse and use a reversing controller to determine direction, as long as the fan was the correct one?
The project is a Hobie 16 with the sail rig removed, and a plywood deck and steering console added, for use as a runabout, and for a 5 mile commute. Thinking of 3 KWH lithium battery pack.
Thoughts?
