Re: [Electric Boats] Introductions.

Hi there. Thanks for the interest.  Swe' Pea is an efficient hull but there was a problem in the Festival listing.  As stated, max speed is 5-6 Knots but range at max speed is lower.  The 8-hour range happens somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 knots if memory serves.  Still not too shabby for three low-cost batteries.

Have you downloaded the free PDF on how we did the conversion called "Boats with Volts:  The Shocking True Story of Swe‟ Pea‟s Electric Conversion"?.  It's a comprehensive and accurate look at our conversion and hull performance using Swe' Pea as a test case and also shows how we converted her, what parts we used and how you can find the parts.  Its on our Electric Paddle website but here's the direct link; http://electricpaddle.com/downloads/swe_pea_conversion.pdf .    It's an interesting read and also makes a point that hull speed vs how fast you driver her is actually the most important part of the efficiency equation when powering with electric.

There are other conversions out there that have more power and might be better suited for your planing hull but even with a planing hull, if the transom is not too deeply immersed you might have similar performance to ours.  It really all depends on the type of use you expect.  Borrow a 2 hp gas engine and try it.   The performance of our conversion will be close but quite a bit quieter and less smelly.

Joe - I've been on this list (quietly) for a few months with ideas of converting my 1958 runabout (fiberglass I'm afraid) to electric. I'd be interested in your technical details of Swe' Pea. Running for 8 hours at 5-6 knots sounds rather impressive (your boat must move easily through the water). I have a new looking 1958 Johnson 18 HP I could convert.

Thanks,
Thumper

Hi- New to the post and thought I'd introduce myself. Seattle area- owner of Swe' Pea, an electric outboard displacement runabout. This motor was converted from a 10 hp Force 2-stroke. It's now about 1-4 hp, depending on what basis you use but it's a lot of fun. Glad to find an electric community online. You can see pictures of Swe' Pea at the wooden boat foundation site...
