I think it could work quite well with no need for a gear box but you would need to use about 300 volts and adapt a three phase controller . Possibly a manufacturer would inform you how to connect batteries to the internal DC bus of an 8kw induction motor controller .AC motors and drives are replacing DC drives in proffesional systems ( induction motors are inherently more rugged and lower maintainance than DC) but 300volts could be hazerdous for the amateur experimenter. So I wouldnt recommend it without expert help
