Hi,
I have a 5kw/48v (bit undersized but it came with the boat), 240ah flooded bank and a tripp-lite 15a charger, no solar. I charge off of shore power. I was concerned about running out of juice for whatever reason. I did the math and bought a mid-size portable generator that had an RV connection.
Sure enough when I brought the boar from SF Bay to the delta I had no wind, figures with my luck lol. Clamped bank lead and I was motoring at 15a-ish. Generator did the trick! Fired it up and plugged into shore power connection. Charger output at 15a. I watched amp out of bank drop to 0-ish.
In short I was able to motor sail without discharging the bank kind of. End result was motor sail for 8hrs at 15a. Lost 2ah out of bank. That was from goosing it now and then plus slight difference between clamp and charger I guess?
Next step is to can the old charger and step up to a 25a charger.

HOW FAST IS THE CURRENT? I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO USE PROP. YOU WOULD HAVE A BETTER CHANCE WITH A SECONDARY HYDRO TURBINE.
If we go this route, I would probably do some of the installation work under the guidance of a knowledgeable boat mechanic.

We have a power cat with twin diesels. Rather than going electric only, or serial hybrid, we are thinking of at least starting by keeping the diesels and seeing how we go as a parallel hybrid.
The parallel hybrid would have a new electric motor to a speed reduction unit (two differently sized pulleys), then by a belt to a wheel attached to the prop shaft. The attachment would be after the gearbox-engine, as our gearbox can freewheel safely and the diesel would be out of gear.
We may start with one or two Thunderstruck 10kW kits or something similar.
However, I can't work out how to connect the electric motor to the prop shaft. Obviously a wheel (pulley? what do you call it?!) to run the belt on, tightly locked on the prop shaft (ours is 40mm). Preferably using a split collar to reduce maintenance cost (haulouts).
Does anyone know any solutions?

Hi
While a electric drive sounds attractive, in a small boat on a mooring you will never have room for enough solar battery charging that will cost more than the motor install. Even if you were to install enough solar and arch?, lots of batteries ,and an electric motor it will only be suitable as an in and out of harbor slow speed auxiliary engine.5 knots max 3knts cruise.
It will never be suitable for say 4-5 hours of motor on a no wind day. ( cost of elec motor and install , solar , batteries $10-20k for sure)
Your best option is. Mount a new 10-15 hp gas outboard on a transom mount and regain space in the boat. Cost $3-5k. Go 6 knots all day long , easy decision. The new four-stroke motors are not that noisy and very reliable and require very little additional installation. They also don't require new batteries every 5 yrs, probably $1000 a pop! ( lithium would be 3 x your boat value!! )
Not the answer most want to hear but way more practical.
