Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Hybrid w/Honda 2000

My Honda 1000 (900W rated output) runs my chargers with 900W input and 750W into the batteries (as of course all chargers have losses) which is enough for 3.5 knots in calm conditions. I can adjust my propulsion chargers, of which I have two, up to the total of 1100W or less. One charger is 600W, the other 500W. The 600 has a rotary dial to alter output so I don't exceed generator output when using both chargers.

The Honda 2000 is 1600W output. However as I have hybrid power assist using my house bank inverter/charger I can combine my 800W inverter (700W continuous) and my Honda 1000 to give 1600W, so for short term use I don't need the Honda 2000, which uses the same 50cc engine and just revs higher (more noise) and costs half as much again as the 1000 model.

I explain how I use all this here:

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Hybrid w/Honda 2000

My Honda 2000 only runs 1/4 throttle with a 10 amp 60 v charger. Going to a Honda 1000 or knock off. Just because they are smaller and take up less room. I now have my solar panels hooked up. Six 50w panels each charging its own battery. Chances of using the generator now are slim. But just in case!

I can move my 16,000 lb 30 foot boat at 3 knots with just my NG-1 battery charger with no problem. I'm not even maxing out the power output of the Honda to do it. You should have no problem with your boat using the Honda 2000 and appropriate battery charger/power supply. I have found that I use the Honda more for battery charging at anchor than for hybrid operation. In nine years only once did I actually use it for a 40 mile stretch on a windless day and it worked well. I chronicle it here: ELECTRO SAILING AROUND NEW YORK: PART ONE

Yes, you should be able to make or exceed that speed without drawing from the batteries. The honda 2kw portables are fairly popular generators among sailboaters with electric drive. Google for the Bianka blog for a fine example of a sailboat equipped with electric motor, honda generator, and solar panels.

Using a gasoline engine to turn a generator to produce electricity to feed into batteries to power an electric motor to turn a prop is obviously not very efficient. But this is an excellent backup system if you don't mind gasoline onboard, and take appropriate precautions. Ideally for a small sailboat you charge your bank from shore power, and use it only for docking and similar maneuvering, maybe for power tacking, on some boats that don't tack well. Then you use the Honda just to get home when you have to motor, and the batteries are already discharged to the limit.

Hello! I have a similar Thunderstruck kit in my Tartan 27-2. I have heard that the Honda EU2000 is the hot set-up for doing this, but I do not think I can use it on mine, because the rated continuous amp is lower than what my Quickcharge charger requires. This will be our fifth season with the boat, and so far we have not needed it, so not a priority right now. But something to ponder.

Re: [Electric Boats] Hybrid w/Honda 2000

Sailboats are slim, slippery, and low volume.
They work very well with very low power levels, at lower speeds.

Likely, something around 1 kW in typical power use will give you a decent low-speed result.
2.3 knots sounds about right.

This is also about the same as any nr of experiences, here, and elsewhere.

Strictly from calculations I am estimating I could run at about 2.3 kts.   Does this sound right?

Any advice, experience, good stories, etc. are appreciated!

[Electric Boats] Motor

Hello everybody, I have a 3.75 Kw. golf cart motor with added casing and coupling ready to fit directly or to a gearbox. I paid $500 for the motor and $600 for the coupling to be made. I have a Curtis controller too $1200 the lot. I did intend to install it on a 30 foot catamaran i'm building but due to a heart attack that is now just a dream.

Regards Doug.
