with peak currents from 4 to 8 knots, forcing deception pass in a displacement sailboat is a endeavor in slow torture.  I would recommend that you consider your current actions and consider how they could or should change when in a differently-powered boat.  e.g. right now you can just kinda go and have enough range to do whatever suits ya… but that will not be the case under electric power, so a paradigm shift in thinking and planning might be enough to make it more effective than anticipated..

The simplest way of building a system at 400 amp hours is to use the CALB 400 amp hour cells.   That way you only need one monitor and one temp sensor for each 3.2 volts.     This makes the system safer with less connections and better monitoring.

Darin,

It might not be a big deal. One thing I can think of is if you need/care to run your drive motor at full speed you may not have enough volts at lower states of charge. The other thing is anything using the battery will need higher current to meet its power requirements. Again, maybe not a big deal. 
Do you plan to have a generator? If you need to motor against strong currents like you mentioned, you may run low on battery without it.

1972 Buchan 37, kept on Lake Washington (fresh water) entire life, used very little.

WL: 27.3 ft

Cruising speed: 8 kts (efficient, built for racing)

Current ICE: 40hp inboard diesel (to be removed)


Planned Upgrade:


Motor/Controller:  10kW BLDC motor using a kit from Thunderstruck - 10kW (48V)

Batteries: 15S2P LiFeP04 prismatic Calb CA100FI cells (quantity = 30), weight = 226lbs total.  Batteries to be stored in keel where old diesel fuel tanks were previously located.  Battery management system will be used.

House to be served by DC to DC converter for 12V and inverter for 120V AC.  Power use on board includes lights, communication, depth/speed equipment, phone chargers, and occasional microwave use. 


Type of use:


Exploring the San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea (Puget Sound to B.C.).  Occasional vacations up to 1 week.

This should provide about 7.7kWh useable storage assuming 80% depth of discharge.  If I find out I need more, there is space to double the batteries.
