[Electric Boats] All ahead full [1 Attachment]

[Attachment(s) from albert682@yahoo.com [electricboats] included below]

So today we put both the throttles down on the Ray controllers and were calmly pushing 100 amps a side on the motors and moving along at 6.64 knots according to my OpenCpn.  Here is the track for google earth or back to opencpn if you like to compare numbers otherwise the AIS track here >> http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:3824576/zoom:10

Or mission today was attempting to get the autopilot functioning and we failed in that respect but still had a great 3.6 hours on the water.

That was the best footage we could get today for some reason.  Not sure why the autopilot doesn't work as designed but it must be software or it may have been mechanical as at the end of the trip we discovered a bolt had come undone on the connecting rod between the two motors.

[Electric Boats]

Hello all,

I just randomly found this group and am excited to participate.  I live in Maine and recently purchased an Elco inboard electric to re-power my sailboat.  I'm hoping to do the conversion this spring/early summer.

Thanks,
Drew

[Electric Boats] Re: Electric Cruise

The first video there is actually recorded coming back up river from Steveston.  You can tell because we are having to use from left to right in the video 49 amps for the port motor/generator 49amps for the starboard motor/generator and we had on the last shunt gauge some inbound solar power to offset the 100amp current draw of the tow motors like around 17 amps or something.

The wind was blowing back up the river and even though we have a very low profile we are going to be taking a more serious approach to the wind in the future and will be acquiring a wind instrument.

The other gauge on the bottom row reads voltage and any inbound charge current from the two shore battery chargers obviously disconnected.  All the top readings on the gauges measure voltage.  When the system is disconnected via the contactor disconnect switch on the bottom right panel the top right voltage gauge will display the voltage open circuit of the solar array.

We have port and starboard generators wired to the shunts and could effectively drive the boat utilizing gasoline power if necessary as each of the generators will make 60amps but in this case we did not need to.  So from a voltage perspective in the first video you can see we are sitting at 51.2 volts.  In our case we need not worry about a low voltage situation until under 49 volts.  We had still over 50 volts when we tied off at the slip.

Interesting video, and nice boat. Too bad you weren't recording near Steveston. What were the wind conditions at the time?

Can you explain what each of your displays was indicating?

I've sailed out of Burrard Inlet many times, but never on the Fraser. It would be neat to enter the North Arm and work up river with the tides all the way to Pitt Lake. And then come back the next day.

[Electric Boats] Re: Prepping for paint, mounting, and Battery Managemt System

You might want an ammeter and tachometer and maybe a voltmeter visible from the cockpit. Not really essential I guess, but I will soon be installing them outside. Currently I just have improvised, semi functional instrumentation. Tach needs replacing and ammeter is just alligator clipped across a shunt and difficult to see from topside. There are a bunch of old gauges for anemometer and stuff installed in the cockpit on the aft cabin bulkhead and I will be removing them, cutting out and installing an instrument panel, and covering with plexiglass. I am using ordinary panel mount meters/gauges.

It is nice to know your shaft RPM and your current draw. If nothing else, so you can correlate them to speed and compare to other boats, and get an idea of how well your system is performing.

A State Of Charge meter is a good thing to have but you can sort of go by your voltage, after going a couple of hours without either charging or discharging your batteries.
