I was actually going to do that in 2019, a solar-electric world record of The Great Loop, but as always, things got in the way of making the non-winter window, so instead I'll just cruise around Florida. I believe the Great Loop is closed in 2020 for something going on with the locks in the northern part of the loop?

Re: [electricboats] 1900+ km in a Solar Electric Powered, Side Wheel Paddle Boat
Some of the inspiration for our trip came from the 2 voyages made in the 1990's by Sunboat I and Sunboat II from Prince Alfred College in Adelaide. See http://www.solarnavigator.net/prince_alfred_college_adelaide.htm.
I believe the dollar cost (without any equalising for inflation) of River Snail was something less than 10% of that of Sunboat II, reflecting the reduced costs of solar panels and electrics in the intervening 20+ years, as well as the somewhat more "agricultural" construction of RIver Snail.
I believe the Mundoo 3 Solar Electric (https://www.storerboatplans.com/boat/motorboats/electricsolar-power/example-of-solar-electric-real-world-use-liveaboard-boat-and-cartop-canoe/
and www.woodenboat.com/library-content/185.woodenboat-issue.pdf ) has also cruised much of the Murray.
About the only claim we can make is that we are perhaps the first solar electric paddle wheeler to make the journey!
But it was a lot of fun...
Dave

Re: [electricboats] 1900+ km in a Solar Electric Powered, Side Wheel Paddle Boat
A really amazing journey!
I'm wondering if that is an international world record for inland solar boating: though I'm aware that some folk have travelled the 'Big circuit' in the USA by electric boat, I'm not sure if it was solar all the way or battery electric.

G'day All:
I was reminded that I had been a member of this group when I saw the notification of the move to groups.io.
I had browsed the original Yahoo group a while back when contemplating building a solar boat.
We did build "River Snail (notopala solaris)" and I can report that we cruised her successfully down the navigable length of the Australia's Murray River during November / December 2017, a distance of just over 1900km taking us 6 weeks, completely under solar power.
If anyone is interested, further details are available in the blog at www.riversnail.wordpress.com.
Have fun,
Dave

Thanks, Barci9999.
In fact, in view of all the back and forth on this discussion area on what would be done about the site shutdown, I joined the Electric Boat Association as a paying member last week. The EBA presently only has a handful or two of members in the U.S., but I liked the idea of joining an international organization, and I felt there was at least a chance that some other ElectricBoats group members would make the same decision.I'm still working on my conversion project, and so look forward to exchanging information with everyone in the near future.[-tv]Tom VanderMeulen

You have been added to electricboats@groups.io
Hello,
The owner of the electricboats Yahoo Group has moved the group to Groups.io, a new Groups service. You have been subscribed to the new group using your email address newarmyguitar24@gmail.com. The name of the new group is electricboats, and messages can be sent to it at electricboats@groups.io. The group homepage is located here.
Groups at Groups.io are similar to Yahoo Groups, but we have several new features and we encourage you to explore the Groups.io website. If you have never registered with Groups.io before, your account will not have a password set yet. To log in, you can use the 'Email me a link to login' button to have a link emailed to you that will let you log into the website.

UPDATE ON MIGRATION TO GROUPS.io
There are 800 groups ahead of us in the migration queue, it seems to move at roughly 100 per day – obviously that is dependent on the size of the groups, etc.So I am figuring that it will take about a week before I get the email saying all has been completed.Jeff

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Good news: the EBA will support the migration to Io .
I just went through this with the Atkin Boats group. With over 900
groups ahead of you, and some behind you willing to pay a couple of C
notes to jump the queue, it'll take at least a couple of weeks for the
migration to be completed. Be patient.
BTW, I recently bought a little keel sailboat with an interesting
auxiliary drive -- a 24 volt trolling motor of the type that's supposed
to be bolted to the "cavitation" plate of a giant outboard, but it's
bolted to the side of the keel. So, I'll probably be participating more
here after the dust settles...

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Yahoo Groups
Archives
Complete archives have been saved. There are at least two backups that have been exported by group members:
- Tim Malcolm - tim@xmfi.org has made an archive (not sure with which tool/procedure) availible here:
https://app.box.com/s/wl19q84jp58njycgy1tcqoe6k98hers1
- I have made an archive using https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yahoo-group-archiver which is availible here: http://eb.ip8.org/archive/
Survey
I put up a very short survey here: https://forms.gle/fFHd3frYXMrEvjdq6 11 people have filled out (thanks so much!) and here is the summary so far:
1 - Members who responded use email to access/reply to group messages more than the group website (81.8% vs 36.4%) although significantly 18% ONLY us the group website. Some members use both email and the group website.
2 - 100% of members who responded would like to continue having the ability to post photos, 70% sharing documents, and 90% sharing links.
3 - Regarding possible new features: 70% are interested in a boat/project registery (in which members could create a boat/project, and upload related photos, updates, etc), 90% are interested in having a supplier/vendor directory, and 50% are interested in a classifieds / craigslist style feature. An additional request was for a lite data mode for when members are accessing from bandwidth constricted connections (sat, ssb, etc), which I think would be great!
4- Additional general notes from responding members included: request to strip extraneous html from emails, receive messages by email digest and respond on group website, importance of data portablilty, platform agnostic for future moves (if needed), and the need to raise some funding to support the group transfer (and perhaps ongoing operation)
It would be really great to get some more input here, so anyone that has a moment, please fill out survey here: https://forms.gle/fFHd3frYXMrEvjdq6 just takes a minute.
Thread comments / next steps:
In addition to the survey, there has been some good feedback in the message threads, which I would roughly summarize as:
1 - Strong agreement to NOT use Facebook. Lots of responses to this effect, so I think that is clear no go.
2 - Offer from a number of members to help transfer, and perhaps to help moderate going forward. Myles has noted he inherited the moderation role, and perhaps this is a good opportunity to build-up the group moderation / admin resources. I'll reach out to everyone that has offered help off list in the next couple days, and perhaps we can organize from there. If you are interested in being part of this effort (either for the transfer or for ongoing purposes) please let me know @ roland.wells@gmail.com
3 - Some worry related to proprietary platforms, and specifically related to limitations of Groups.IO offering. Now that we know we have archives saved, I think we should take our time to work through the input from members and offers for help so we can come up with the best long-term solution.
4 - Jeff with EBA has begun a transfer to Groups.IO. This certainly is the path of least resistence, and a big thanks to Jeff for moving this forward. That said, based on points above I think we should at least consider some of the feedback and raised concerns before we finalize the switch to Groups.IO. Jeff has sent several updates related to ongoing process of transferring.
More soon.
Thanks. Roland
There appear to be two threads connected to this topic, so I am posting in this one as well.
UPDATE: Nov 6 10:30 am ESTThe transfer to Groups.io is now underway
We are in process of transferring your group. Depending on Yahoo and demand, this may take several days. You will be notified by email when the transfer is completed. Also, they notified me that:IMPORTANT: Yahoo Groups has been very unreliable lately. We will do our very best, but there is a good chance that we may not be able to transfer all of your messages, photos or files. We will tell you which ones we were not able to transfer. Also, the migration queue is several days long at this point. Please be patient as we work through the backlog of transfer requests.ANOTHER NOTE FROM GROUPS.IOAlso note that it appears that most Photos sections are currently having an outage and it isn't known if they'll be restored prior to the deadline.
