Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Lion batteries

Well, that is not too exorbiant considering it includes installation and I assume removal of the old A4. And AGM batteries... but the big Q is how big is the bank? If it is just 100AH/48V, well... hmmm...

You might consider the DIY approach. Buy a Kelly controller and a ME0907 or ME0201014201  motor, golf cart batteries, charger, some angle iron and pulleys, a thrust bearing, cable, wire, a few meters, and you are all in at around $2600 or so for a 220ah/48v system. If you can sell the old A4 for a couple hundred bucks, then cheaper. The turnkey installation is going to be the quick and simple fix, but I agree it is not always sensible to go so expensive on a plain old good ol boat like the Catalina 27, especially if it is not a showroom quality boat. Then again, compare that to a new diesel. A Beta 10 is going to run you probably $10k installed. If you really want to go cheap, get a 6hp long shaft outboard. In fact if your A4 is dead already, you might want to install an outboard bracket for now and take your time deciding what you want to do re electric drive.

On the subject of outboards, you might consider an electric outboard. Yes, that's a thing. You can even roll your own out of a dead one, and a motor and controller like I already mentioned. You might keep an eye out for a used one. You will still need a bank of batteries, of course.

I've been following the group for a couple of month with the plan to reengine my Catalina 27 when my Atomic-4 needed replacement but now it's been a lot sooner then I expected.  I got a quote from a local shop in Annapolis for a Electric Yacht QT 5.0 KW system with AGM batteries and a charger for 7500 plus installation which prices it out of a reasonable range for a 15k boat.  Is this quote unreasonable or is this just the cost of a electric system?
