Without cowl, $1,500. With cowl, $1,800. I'm with you about the gear reduction. These motors need to spin around 3,000 RPM to make the power required to move these sailboats. Most folks are using Motenergy's BLDC motors and the better ones produce about .15nm of torque per amp. Here are some numbers I crunched for someone else based on the Motenergy motor:


Apply 50 amps at 1,000 motor RPM's=1.05 HP
Apply 50 amps at 2,000 motor RPM's=2.11 HP
Apply 50 amps at 3,000 motor RPM's=3.16 HP

Apply 100 amps at 1,000 motor RPM's=2.11 HP
Apply 100 amps at 2,000 motor RPM's=4.21 HP
Apply 100 amps at 3,000 motor RPM's=6.32 HP

This illustrates why it makes good sense to run higher voltages, like 48v and 60v. If the motors not spinning fast enough, you have to throw higher amps to it to make up for it. If your running with lead acid, the Peukert's Law will get you in the form of reduced capacity. I for one think that 60v is a nice pack voltage.

Too big a prop or 1 to 1 simply overloads the motor and makes it less efficient.
