Re: [Electric Boats] Pods for sailboat conversion to electric.

Mike
Electric Yacht of Southern California,
Dan H here,
My home grown drives are what you would call a sail drive, but in fact, consulting with several designers and engineers in the field of large ASD (Azimuth Stern Drives), these are commonly called ASD drives or steerable "L" drives.  I think to be fair, and as if it really mattered, the drives this fellow e-Boat drive builder is discussing, is probably what the designers would call an "L" drive.  But really, does this really matter?  The fact it might go on a sail boat or a NON-sail boat is irrelevant.

And please everybody, let's take a hand full of chill pills.  I enjoy the exchange of information but it is frustrating when there is tension.

I am just happy some fuller is tryin to meet a need in the world without soaking 'em 'cause it is a cool idea that has come of age.   Please, please let's be positive here.  I see enough in my build, that want to squash it 'cause they didn't think of it or approved the design.
Cheers all,
Dan H, (the other dan)...

Exactly Mike, I always refer to mine as a Sail drive. I am currently using a standard 10" same as what was on it, but there is a high thrust available if I need it. Should have it water tested by next weekend.

The motor is more accurately a saildrive rather than a pod.  I would like to know the propeller you are using on the drive as we are seeing the traditional saildrive propeller (fixed or folding) very adequate for electric propulsion.  They do not look like the "outboard" props shown.  They are also a bit of a pain as the anodes are between the propeller and the saildrive and require the removal of the propeller to be swapped out.

The POD is a system in which the electric motor is mounted in the water.  Torqeedo has such a product.

On cruise ships and other large vessels the pods are massive and the engineers work on them when they are running mounted below the ship.  More recently they have added steerage to the pod and removed the rudder form the ship.  The give you an idea of the reliability of these big electric drive systems.
