The first question is: "How many HP do you really need to push the boat for what you want to do?"
My old Catalina 30 came with a 30HP Atomic 4. When I was considering repowering it with electric, I probably could have done well with a much smaller electric motor. I'm thinking a 5KW motor would have been ok(??).
The potentially much more expensive part of the equation is the battery bank. How far and how fast do you want to go? Do you want to cruise several hours, or just get in and out of a marina? Are there strong currents or winds to deal with? If you want to cruise a while, are you content to idle along at 3mph, or do you want to go a "blazing fast" 5-7mph?
If you could give an idea of what boat you're putting this on (which will help in sizing the motor, and power requirements), and what your usage model is likely to be (how far, how fast, how long, and how often), that would help with parameters. And then finally, are you able to charge with shore power, or do you need solar (or other) to recharge?

Subject: [Electric Boats] Turnkey package for Sailboat
Was curious what members thought would be the best turnkey package to replace a 12 hp diesel sailboat motor.
