RE: [Electric Boats] Re: Electric conversion

Ditto here…and it's been 11 ½ years since I've taken that data on my boat, but here's what I measured then:

Speed

Power (Pbatt)

Speed/Power (range/energy)

2.5 kt

0.69 kw

3.62 n-mi/kw-h

2.9

0.97

3.00

3.5

1.33

2.64

4.0

1.73

2.31

4.2

2.14

1.96

4.5

2.85

1.58

4.9

3.52

1.39

5.2

4.20

1.24

5.6

4.97

1.13

5.75

5.79

0.99

6.0

7.29

0.82

Graphically:

It's wiggly, and the power data assumes constant battery voltage of 36v as battery current was measured.  Speed was measured using a "knotstick".  This data taken in 2004…you can see the power roughly doubling with speed in knots.

Your mileage may vary-

Quite Agree,

I've been preaching that for years, Not that anyone listens .

Just a very general statement about hull speed; it takes twice the energy to motor at 6 knots vs. 5 knots on a ~33 foot LOA  (26.4 LWL) displacement sailboat. So, don't think about going hull speed (1.34 X square root of LWL in feet). Think instead about a sweet spot of around 1 X square root of LWL. This puts my boat's ideal speed under power at around 5.1 knots instead of 6.0. It's just a general guideline. I could go even further at 4 knots. What's the hurry?
Thanks to James Lambden for this concept.

Yep, they have fooled me a few times with that one.  Click add to cart and it shows as out of stock... :(

[Electric Boats] Re: Torqeedo Travel 801 Battery Connector Information

Steve et al,

There is another Yahoo group that is handy for older marine parts:

Meanwhile, I'm developing a search engine that contains only
used boat parts. It emails initial results followed by daily updates, if any.
Currently has thousands of parts from numerous sources.
The self-serve component is still in development but I have been setting up
searches for individuals for testing purposes. Just let me know what
you are looking for. Read more at: http://www.boatusedpartsearch.com/
Both the service and the search are free.

I also have a conversion project in the works with Electroprop to replace the A4 (w/V-drive) on my C&C 33-1 with a Racer model. The pic shows 3 of the 4 NorthStar 210FT Blue+ AGM batteries. The fourth is located aft, on a shelf that held the waterlift muffler. I'll have to build a transverse beam to mount the motor and it will protrude about a foot into the cabin. It's a compromise that I made very early on. V-drive conversions might seem more suited for a belt and pulley arrangement anchored on the engine stringers but I like the having (most of) the batteries where the engine once was. Right now I'm awaiting the other components from Electroprop.

I would love to get one, anyone know where I can find one?  Torqeedo no longer carries the 801 or any of its associated parts, they've since moved onto redesigned stuff that is not compatible.

[Electric Boats] New member, developing electric outboard

My company just finished the engineering prototype of our 20 kW (continuous) outboard motor. This isn't a conversion; it's a new development, with no seawater loop, and a very small upper unit (far smaller than any gas outboard). It runs at 1500 RPM with a large custom prop, so its efficiency is high, and it provides the propulsion of a 35 HP gas outboard.

The battery packs weigh just under 100 lbs and contain 6 kWh each of li-ion batteries. These packs can be combined (working in parallel) to reach higher battery capacity for longer range.

One question I have for this group is: what hull do you think would best show the capabilities of this system, and the benefit of clean, quiet power? We're currently using a hull that rowing coaches normally use, but that's not mainstream.

Thanks.

Andy
