Or you go to http://www.evdrives.com/motenergy_me0907.html and get it for $395 instead of $500 at Thunderstruck but it's still made in China.
The Germans make some top of the line stuff but they're proud of it and I really liked the Agni motors too but again, the cost comes into play. My D&D shunt motor system was almost half the cost of a PM motor setup with comparative performance specs. Also, the controller was cheaper, more versital, and the software to tweek it was free.
I took the hit in efficiency, (80%ish vs 90%ish)and chose the old school shunt motor for my project in big part because it was made in America but primarily when I looked at the lower cost options, I figured the golf cart technology was a little more proven because it has a long history of taking a licking and keeping on ticking. Admittedly, if I had the budget I probably would have upgraded to a more cutting edge system but I'm skeptical of Chinese made hardware with extremely low price points. Maybe it will stand the test of time but you're rolling the dice. D&D seemed like a good bet and I like to buy American whenever I can.
That's why I'll spend more to buy tools at Sears instead of Harbor Frieght. You get what you pay for.

Sure, you could do that.
Or you could spend less than that and get a 6-8HP 36-48v DC permanent magnet motor that is more efficient than a series or shunt golf cart motor.
And much smaller and lighter and possibly even cheaper than your golf cart motor…
