I run a 17" displacement hull, so a similar sized boat.

She has a Nelco Nexus 48v DC motor which I'm told is going to cost an arm and a leg to repair/restore. Does anyone know of a good supplier of a similar motor in the UK? I will be looking for a direct coupling to the shaft. I'm not keen on pulleys, belts or gear trains.

On my 750 kg 17" boat I'm using a German 'Perm 132' motor directly
coupled to the shaft - on 36v - and I ended up limited the throttle to
60%, so I may have been better with 24v.

You probably want to see if you can find the volts/RPM graph for the
old motor and see how different something like a Perm 132 is.
Pictures and description of my boat is online at
<http://www.sleeper.apana.org.au/boat/>. The page hasn't been updated
for a while - 'cause there has been nothing of note to add to it this
season.

When my 36v sets of FLA batteries finally die, I might go for a 48v
lithium pack and put a reduction gear in, so I can run the motor at
higher volts (and thus less current). While it doesn't get too hot now,
it does get very warm. And that heat is loss.
