[Electric Boats] Re: Repowering a 65 motor sailer

In my feeble mind using multiple motors may be the way to go, in cars in direct drive line drive not wheel drive, DIY has placed multiple motors to increase the HP, and in doing so they have eliminated the transmission, dont know how they get reverse. This is important!

Now they have low speed torque and the ability to add power by increasing the voltage. It seem that at low speed they half the amps so the motors dont over heat and then when running they bring the amp load to normal and then double the voltage for a boost in speed. On a boat I can (I Think)either reduce the amount of motors running by clutches, or half the amperage. this will give me a non stall start against the prop torque. which one is better?. hope some one has done this or did research on it.

My vision is to use multiple 5-10 hp motors that are 24-48 and give them each a bank of batteries. Mount them one after another on each side of a drive line and use nylon belts on sprockets to turn each one separately on the drive line. since now they are cheaper individually, I can keep a spare and be able to swap one out on the fly. If I went to a hybrid system, parts would not be available at all ports nor a mechanic that can fix it. I would still need two units to match the system I have now. When cruising KISS is just as important as reliability.

imagine bringing your Toyota prius to a fishing village and asking the boat mechanic to fix it.

Does anyone know a brushless motor that is water cooled at 5-10 hp, 24-48 volts? once I get some numbers I can design the system and test it.

The other question is how do you get reverse, I was reading its not as simple as to just reversing polarity because the motors are wound to be rotated in only one direction. I could do it with the transmission, or is there a transmission that only has one or two speeds and reverse? right now I have a borg warner trans, I havent looked into how it functions so it might be ok to reuse.
