[Electric Boats] Re:repowering a sailboat - 30 ft Catalina

Hi Rob

I owned a CNG powered vehicle here in NZ some 20 years ago and would
counsel against it for marine use. The storage cylinders for CNG are
extremely heavy as the gas is pressurised to 3000psi. My small van
had two 60 litre tanks, one of which I could just lift on my own,
empty. These gave a range of about 90 miles, total. The van could
also run on its' original petrol which gave a range of some 300
miles. The CNG had considerably less power than petrol but did run
very smoothly. Refuelling was easy here then as many petrol stations
had CNG facilities. All this has gone now so it is not an option
here, at least. The only benefit of CNG was that it was much cheaper
than petrol. The tanks had to be pressure tested every 5 years and
the rest of the gas system leak tested; an expensive business.

Cheers

Bill
