Re: [Electric Boats] Digital amp meters vs. PWM controllers

For what its worth. I have tried two different brands of the ebay variety digital meters. In all I have burned up four of them. It was a pretty discouraging experience. I spoke with another electric boater who had a similar experience with these meters. You get what you pay for, but they are cheap so you could give it a shot. Maybe you will have better luck than me.

If you are using them as most people do you do not want to put them inline with the "pulsed" output of the controller. I am assuming you want to measure amps out of the battery into the controller, not amps out of the controller into the motor. Most would consider the former a more significant value. This would be a relatively smooth source of DC current and shouldn't affect the meter adversely.

Good luck,
Hans

Does anyone know if the low-cost ebay digital DC 50-amp meters with shunts are RMS type and reasonably accurate, or does the PWM controller load confuse the readings ?
