Right after I posted, I knew that I should have been more specific. Electric drives with electronic controllers in auxiliary sailboats are a relatively immature industry compared to traditional ICE systems.
Electric cars also predate gasoline cars, but gas cars are way more developed and electric cars today have to be considered an emerging technology. One could also point out that kites have been around for thousands of years, but kite surfing is new technology.
But all of these bits of trivia are merely a distraction from the conversation at hand.
