That method has always been my plan for electric on my Triton, electric motor between the engine and the shaft, with a clutch at both ends of the motor.
Seems like it would allow driving through the motor, and if the right kind,it would operate as a generator too.
Figure it would give me the range of an ICE, and all the advantages of electric. with a good backup for either.
I often range too far to rely on electricity alone, and can't see running an ICE powered generator simply to run an electric motor to increase range when I could also use the ICE to power the boat directly.
