Re: [Electric Boats] hydro generator

Mike, I plan on installing the generator inside the cockpit and using a flexible shaft with the 3 blade prop doing the up and down swing thing...    My neighbor just gave me 4 8/10 flex cables in a housing that he isn't going to use any longer...  good timing....  chuckle     I have 2 other Hydro electric projects that I'm working on also, both only in the  water when you need the power, then out, completely....  Dave K

Go for it!  Once again the beauty having electric storage on board for propulsion comes through. While regeneration has been somewhat of a disappointment in many EP systems. I think maybe because the prop is not located in the best place to receive regen energy. Systems like this drop down pod generator may be more efficient because they can be located in places like the "slipstream" where I suspect their many be more energy to be gathered as opposed to the propulsion prop which is usually located behind the keel and somewhat shadowed by it. Nice to know there are other alternatives besides relying on the propulsion prop regen. Though I have found I able to manage quite well regen or no regen with my current system of solar, wind and Honda 2000 already and don't feel an urgent need to install one of the external generators it's still nice to have them availible.

Hi Mark,

I saw this unit a while back, looks good and I love the fact that you can pull it out very easily.   I'm building a unit much like it on the port hull of my 26 Stiletto, swing it into position went I want to charge and out when I'm finished.   A friend of mine gave me his tow behind generator, it made perfect sense to me to modify it into one of these units...    Dave K

This is something I saw at the Strictly Sail boat show that looks interesting http://www.wattandsea.com/index_en.php

These units are optimized for low drag, I'm thinking a hydro generator like this designed at 48 volts with a larger prop....

I like that you pull it out of the water when you do not need it.
