I'd like to think that nobody is foolish enough to go out and spend tens of thousands of dollars on solar panels based on what some guy on an internet forum wrote! Please don't take anything I say as an attempt at giving professional advice to anyone. This is just a hobby for me, and my comments are only meant as food for thought.
Granted, the numbers I tossed out there are off the cuff "best case", but I think yours are way pessimistic. I urge you to check out this calculator:

I believe NREL is considered by many in the industry to be an authoritative source. That's were I got the 4 to 5 hour rule of thumb. That said, after re-visiting some of my assumptions, I see that the 4-5 hour figure IS optimistic, and only applies to the Summer months. It's more like 2-5 for the whole year. That is, 2 hours rated output per day in December and 5 in July. That assumes FLAT-MOUNTED panels, and includes a 77% derating factor per NREL's default settings. Their calculator is geared towards grid-tied systems and the derating factor is intended to account for inverter losses, but I think it would be reasonable to assume it's just as valid for DC only systems. You can insert whatever number you like in the calculator.
I didn't mean to suggest that you could get the rated output ALL the time, or even at high-noon on June 21. I was assuming you'd be charging batteries with it, and that the daily average is what you're really concerned with when estimating how far you could travel. Also keep in mind that modern "max power point tracking" PV controllers are quite a bit more efficient than panels connected directly to the batteries. That may account for some of Myles and Mike's lower output.
You made one other point I should address. We were talking about houseboats. The type of houseboats I had in mind, whether they be pontoon "shanty boats" or big ol' RV-barges ARE pretty much rectangular.
I get your point about educating forum newcomers. I don't think I've posted any false information here, at least not intentionally, and I really don't think I'm that far off the mark in this case. At any rate, it is ultimately up to the reader to decide what to do with information gleaned from these forums.
