The only limitation would seem to be the setup expense, and even that can be kept low by having less batteries, (than a system more dependent upon electricity that is stored) although larger power motors remain expensive.
It also has scope for expansion if and when better battery types become common.
Also, as far as long term running costs go, less batteries mean less expense at replacement time. Battery life might tend to be better too, with a different mindset, meaning less depth of discharge.
And if used with gaps of a few days, lends itself to totally free power day-to-day if a solar cell or small windmill is added.
The interior can be cleaned out, and the ICE component stays outside, and as pointed out before, is available for home use in winter.

Nanci:
I can move my 8 ton boat about three knots in calm conditions without
drawing any power from the battery bank using the Honda 2000 if I
need too. Actually I still have power to spare from the generator so
I usually charge up my 12 volt house bank at the same time. In
reality I'd only do that when there is no wind which is not very
often. The wind usually picks up soon enough and I gradually start
cutting back on the EP as the wind picks up. Pretty soon I am sailing
again and shut the generator down. I could also have put in a bigger
diesel generator and powered the EP system from it too but personally
I'm done with diesel.
