Re: [Electric Boats] Top problems with electric boat systems (need your input)

Off the shelf motor - controller - battery technology works fine for displacement hulls, especially sailboats that need the ballast weight anyway.

I would say the lack of range and power are deal breakers for most people.  A decent electric install is as expensive as a diesel with huge range and some speed trade-offs.  The advantages of quiet instant-on propulsion are not sufficient benefits to offset the range-power-cost issues for most people.

I really need your advice as I am studying the major market and technology problems with the whole electric boat industry......

What do you consider to be the biggest problems with electric boats...either pre-built or retrofitted

1)  Is it the motors themselves?  what's wrong with Mars motors or other brands?

2)  Is it the controlling circuitry that is most problematic?  If so, what's the big issue?

3)  Is it the charging circuitry?  What could be done to better the charging methods?

4)  Is it the batteries that is most problematic?

Sincerely,
Doug Hitchcock
