Re: [Electric Boats] Re: house boat + hybrid

Aaron,

My numbers are much different than others, and I no longer have the boat.
I was cruising with no time limit. The boat dry weight 12000 lost the go fast line long ago this was raised 6". Boat type Catalina 30.
Replaced Universal 5411.  Direct drive installation.  2200w-3hp 220v 3phs industrial explosion proof motor. VFD controller requiring 220v power source. Power source:  220v 4000w 1phs genset. inverter feed 24vdc input, 220vac output 3000w.  Cruise speed under power, 2 to 3 kts. I had 8 6v deep cycle 105 batteries.  This was more than I needed but did what I wanted,  I was without a powerplant for a year, and anything was better, so there you have it.

Would I do it again?  I have a 12ft canoe with a 30lbs thrust minnikota trolling motor and now am land based.  But yes I would do it again with 48vdc setup. I didn't collect data because it didn't matter to me.

Kevin, Thank you for the reply. It raised a few questions for me-

What does your boat weigh?

What speed do you travel at?

What size battery bank do you have?

Voltage?

How may HP is your motor?

These are the specs I am considering-

Weight 15 - 17 tons

Speed 4-5 knots

Two 50 hp electric motors (may need to be much larger)

Solar panels- 16' x 30'

The specs on the motor & battery bank are flexible. My plan is to have it
charged at dock, run under battery/solar power for up to a couple of hours.
Stay there long enough to recharge via the large solar array. The gen set
would be for those days requiring longer trips, or when the sun doesn't
want to cooperate. I also want to run Led lighting, Low Voltage frig,
Radio etc. . . off the battery bank.

Any input would be appreciated
