[Electric Boats] New Member Intro
Greetings to all---I'm a new member located in Waterford, Va. I'm interested in converting my 1964 Tartan 27 to electric power. The previous owner had removed the engine, and I find the potential ability to 'ghost' along silently motorsailing, particularly here on the Chesapeake where we have so many light-air days, to be a real attraction. If I pull the electric trigger, I'd almost certainly go the DIY route rather buying a drop-in unit. My concern, like so many others, is range. I don't want to sail thirty miles away on Saturday to find a flat calm on Sunday, and still need to be back to work Monday. I would plan on using the fairly-standard Mars/ETek 4Kw motor, along with four Odyssey PC1800s, but I'm particularly interested in any sort of 'genset' on a micro level, ideally something to pump out the juice almost as fast as I can burn it. Seems like a lot of folks use that Honda 2000eu generator, but is there a better way? Should I consider one of those little Lombardini diesels hooked to a big alternator (which I suppose would have to be 48v?) Or perhaps instead of an alternator, should I use the diesel to drive another Mars/Etek motor regeneratively, giving me both DC current and parts redundancy? Other approaches? As with everything marine-related, quality counts, but price is an issue, too. Any help/thoughts appreciated. Thanks! Warren Stein
