Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Electric aux propulsion system for day sailor

Neil,

Its a Castle Controls "Mamba Max", good for 90 amps and works with both brush and brushless motors.  Its really more than I need but had it in the junk box.  You need a controller meant for a car to get reverse.  The throttle is called a "servo tester" in hobby language.

It is an Endura motor.   You don't want the Endura speed control, though, as it just puts a resistor in parallel with the motor to slow down thus wasting lots of precious power.  I had hoped I could prop the motor to pull about 20 amps wide open and therefore not need any speed control at all but could not find a prop that would work.  A 6v battery would work efficiently with out a controller but I needed 12v for the GPS and bilge pump.

The motor does fit in the well and can be stored there with the plug in for sailing.  I worked out the well size with a cardboard cutout of the motor and a piece of plywood to draw well sides and hole location.  If there is more than about 10 mph wind I really can't tell the difference - motor in or motor out - in the sailing speed.

Your spritsail skiff sounds very similar to my Oughtred Arctic Tern; this modified MK would work just as well for you.

Very cool, Denny, thanks for the info/update.

Can you tell us what model controller you used? Do you have forward and reverse? And I assume that is an Endura motor?

The unit looks at first glance to be too big to get through the cutout, but I assume you can just squeeze it through if you tilt it just right?

I've got a 120 AH AGM and a 30 lb Endura sitting around and I might try this is in my next sailboat build (20'6" x 5'4" Spritsail Skiff, traditional lines but built light using ply/stitch and glue).
