[Electric Boats] Electric aux propulsion system for day sailor

 

Last fall I shared with you some experiments with a trolling motor and a canoe to see if I could build a propulsion system for an 18' sailboat I planned to build in the winter. My goals were the drive should not be seen or heard and be easily removable for sailing and store inside it's well.

In summary, the 18' x 5'4", 450# boat will go 12 miles at 4 mph with one group 24, 53# AGM battery taken to 80% dod. 3 mph gives 20 miles range. The "system" is a Minnkota 36# thrust motor driven by an RC car controller and using an APC 10x6 pusher prop meant for a model airplane.
