Hi John,

Not sure why you are having to reset to full as you call it. You certainly should not have to do that, unless you've interrupted the power supply in which case you'll need to fully charge to re-sync.

Have you the latest firmware? v3.08 is latest. If not register and get from here:

The BMV does not synchronize automatically

One possibility is that the battery
never reaches the fully charged state.
The other possibility is that the charged voltage setting should be lowered
and/or the tail current setting
should be increased.

2.2
Synchronizing the BMV
For a reliable readout, the state of charge as displayed by the batt
ery monitor has to be synchronized regularly with the true state of charge of
the battery. This is accomplished by fully charging the battery.
In case of a 12V battery, the BMV resets to 'fully charged' when the
following 'charged parameters' are met: the voltage exceeds 13.2V and
simultaneously the (tail-) charge current is less than 4.0% of the total
battery capacity (e.g. 8A for a 200Ah battery) during 4 minutes.

The BMV can also be synchronized (i.e. set to 'battery fully charged')
manually if required. This can be achieved in normal operating mode by
holding the + and – buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds, or in setup
mode by using the SYNC option (see section 4.2.1, setting number 10).

If the BMV does not synchronize automatically, the charged voltage, tail
current, and/or charged time may need adjustment.
When the voltage supply to the BMV has been interrupted, the battery
monitor must be resynchronized before it can operate correctly

I think it would depend on how accurate you want to be.  If you just want to know if the charge sources are keeping ahead of the usage amps out and in should be enough to know.  If you want 2% results that's different.

I have a Victron BVM-700 which is pretty good at tracking of both discharge and charge over time.  But I find that after being out for  a week's cruise that I need to reset it to "full" once back at the dock and having gone through a charge only cycle.

There are several things that can affect the battery monitor prematurely arriving at 100% SOC during a dynamic charge/discharge situation:  battery terminal voltage and time at that voltage; battery current and time at that current;  Peukert exponent for discharge; recharge "efficiency" (which may be different than the Peukert factor for discharge.

You can probably tune the thresholds and timeout factors in most battery monitors to overcome dynamic charging/discharging, but a simple amps in amps out during charging while motoring may be the best.

As the shaft down angle increases, you are facing the prop further downward, creating more torque about the Z axis, which causes the boat to want to spin in the opposite direction. Compensating for this wastes thrust. Or in the case of an outboard or a longtail arrangement, it will torque the motor sideways about its pivot. So there is a practical limit to how much down angle you can use. Also, you really do want to keep thrust more horizontal. The downward angle shortens the forward vector. If you want to pick the stern up more, you will need to add some plane surface to the hull aft. Like some trim tabs or something. This of course also increases drag, though. There is no free lunch here. But you can certainly experiment and see if you can find a sweet spot that suits you and your equipment. Just don't expect a miracle.

Why not keep the EP & put an outboard on the transom for the times you need to motor a long distance. 

Seems to me you'd have the best of both worlds for doing the loop

I've put a copy of the Lifeline Battery Technical manual in;
Files > Batteries, Chargers and Charging

Just for reference, a source of info.  While this is specific to the characteristic of Lifeline batteries, it is in many ways good information for lead acid AGM  specifically and somewhat useful for lead acid in general.

I noted a couple of interesting references in that manual:

Time to Reach Full Charge = [(DOD/100) x Rated Capacity (Ah) ÷ Rated Output of Charger (Amp)] + 2 hours.

This seems to indicate that recharge may be somewhat Peukart independent, contrary of my previous assumption.  Perhaps pushing current into is different electro-chemistry than pulling current out.

The battery is fully charged when the current drops below 0.5% of the battery's rated capacity (0.5A for a 100Ah battery).

The 0.5% is definitely specific to Lifeline ( for many batteries 2% would be a more reasonable number) , but illustrates the concept that the way to know when a battery is full is to measure the current.  Note this is done in absorption and after the current drops to a constant level.
