Got it. Sounds like a good plan. My 12 volt House bank is separate from the propulsion bank.  But, you've given me a  idea to use an additional mini battery switch off of the BEP 721 main switch to feed my 300 watt 48 volt to 12 volt converter on one side and the 1500 watt 48 volt inverter on the other side. I'll mount the mini switch inside the cabin so I can power either device when I need them easily and also be able to disconnect them completely from the bank as well. Thanks.

[Electric Boats] Progress with DC brushless motor controller

 

My test setup using an inexpensive low power (10-30 Volt 10 amp) PWM motor controller to drive a bank of high power STP75NF75 MOSFETs looks very promising. These MOSFETs are rated 75 Volts and 80 AMPS so I plan to parallel at least 6 of them for 480 AMPS.  The Battery Bank will be only 48 volts, which is sufficient for the ME0709 motor in my sailboat installation.

In my test set-up I used a 400V 70 Amp blocking diode to across the motor leads to block the reverse EMF  and a 1000 ohm resistor to maintain the MOSFET gate at ground when not  energized by the controller. The unloaded motor responded very well over full range of controller.  Questions for electronic experts:

1.       1. Can I just simply parallel the MOSFETs on a single heat sink or do I need some resistive isolation between them on the gates?

2.      2.  What else should I use to protect the MOSFETs from transients? More diodes? Zener diodes? Capacitors? Have seen various written advice

3.      3.  If I assume all motor starts will be ramped up from low levels, and there will be no starting surge it does not seem that I need pre-charge capacitors found with many commercial controllers. Is this correct or am I missing something?

A flat belt and a timing belt, at least as I understand the
definitions, are two different things. Poly-V belts are also pretty
flat and quite different from common V belts.

Something I like about flat belts, and perhaps poly-V belts, but
unlike toothed belts, is that you can let them slip to have a clutch.
That's probably not so useful on a boat, but I could see doing a car
transmission using 99% efficient flat belts (or poly-V belts) instead
of a bunch of whirring gears in thick oil, that lose 30% of the power.

My idea would be two shafts, input and output, with a different sized
pulley set for each 'gear'. The belts would be just stiff enough to
expand into ovals that don't touch the pulleys until pushed into them
with an idler pulley for each gear.

I should think 2 or 3 sets of pulleys and belts ('gears') would make
a great electric car transmission that would go much farther (even
50%) on the same batteries than is typical. (Reverse might need an
idler on the other side from the forward couplings, even tho the
motor direction would also be reversed to go backward.)

The reason James Lambden at Electroprop specs a two-bank switch is to
allow connecting a 48/12 DCDC converter.
The propulsion bank is connected to the common post.
The DCDC converter is connected to position 1
The main contactor and then controller hangs off position 2.

This way, you can disconnect your propulsion bank and still have your
12V house system connected.
I intend to use this setup while I'm away from the boat for running
bilge pumps, the BMS and other stuff.

The only thing I might change at this point would have been to use a DC
converter that outputs 13.7V instead of 12.4v.
That way, I could have connected it as a second battery in in my house
setup, and used an ACR to keep the regular house battery charged up.
Once fully charged, the ACR would disconnect the 12v load on the
converter and then save the propulsion bank.

As for my pack, it's a 16-cell LiFePO4, so it is definitely way beyond a
32V max...
I charge to 58.4v and resting voltage is around 54.4V

I'm just so used to everything being BlueSea as most of the electrical
system on my boat is that -- fuse blocks, 12v battery selector, various
switches.
After a bit of searching, I found this one from BEP that triggers my
brain... It's probably this one:
