[Electric Boats] Engine Mounts

I'm mounting my ME0913 to my wooden sailboat and am using the Thunderstruck gear reduction harness (see link below). I have been advised that using flexible motor mounts is a good idea to reduce the load transmission to the hull--she's an older woodie. Anyway I'm looking at vetus and merequipment among others and all the mounts seem to suggest a minimum weight of say 50 pounds--I assume this is per mount. Since I'm going to use 4 mounts and the ME0913 is about 50 pounds total with all accoutrement that would be only about 12.5 pounds per mount. What should I do? Does anyone have suggestions on motor mounts to buy? Also does anyone know a good chandlery in the SF Bay Area where I might get these (I tried Svendson's and a few others but no one has any in stock). The last question: do I even need them or can I just bolt them to a piece of 1" marine ply bolted to the stringers?

Cheers,

Bradley

Re: [Electric Boats] Kymera Jet Rescue Board

The various reports say about $5k US in 2013, if all goes well (that right, you can't buy one today). With massive sales, retail cost could drop as low as $2k US.

It's hard to glean real specs from marketing data, but it looks like the larger version has a 3.4kW drive and a battery no larger than 3.2kWh (usable or total capacity, hard to tell). That means the max range at 15kts is 10nm or 42 minutes. Going slower will obviously extend the time and distance. If the battery turns out to be smaller, the range and time will suffer, of course.

Looks like a fun toy for regular folk, and well suited for the lifeguard rescue function. They need something that is light enough to carry, instant on, fast enough to get places quickly and powerful enough to drag someone back to safety.

Interesting product, I hope that it actually makes it to market, unlike most of the "really promising" concept craft in recent history.

Fair winds,

[Electric Boats] just joined / posted some pics

I'll be reading through past posts and surely leaning plenty. I posted some pics of a solar only powered canoe I've put together and used the last couple of years, under the title 'solar powered canoe'

The outriggers are 4" PVC tube and the 'speedo' was made from a Walmart bicycle speedometer, 'a kid's bicycle wheel and some fender washers. I can tell you: it's Loud and Splashy! lol! My next speedo will be incased.

I'm currently working on a second canoe, also 16'. It has 6 panels and 2 trolling motors. The panels ar mounted above the canoe providing shade. It will have one 9' windsurf board as an outrigger. And the outrigger will have some kind of backrest or lawn chair and of course its own shade!

Expecting to learn plenty here and have lots of fun. '60 miles north of Los Angeles, CA.

Re: [Electric Boats] Is Marine Certification Required?

Since I don't plan on ever getting "replacement" insurance, that won't be a problem. Being self insured keeps you paying close attention too.

Hey Carter,

Big Brother is watching you.  It is highly unlikely the inspector from
the CG would understand all the details of an E-boat. If however a
failure of your system created an incident you would hope you had done
all you could to make the job right.

Remember the CG can board a US vessel for inspection anywhere in the
world. They were doing this in La Paz when I was there because the port
athorities complained about boat conditions.

Insurance companies have been known to refuse payment of a claim when
something was sub-par and caused a loss.

If you are building a boat for your own personal use and you don't plan to offer it for any sort of charter, are there really ANY requirements other than the obligatory safety systems required by the Coast Guard such as life jackets, sound producing devices, and lights? And who would enforce such requirements? I just can't imagine having the CG do a random inspection and getting a ticket because my fuse was too big for the wiring or some other technical detail like that. Is a boat suppose to be in full ABYC compliance just to get liability insurance? I can understand if you are insuring the value of the boat, then they run you thru the ringer, but nobody even looked at my boat the last time I got a liability only policy.

I personally would just as soon take responsibility for my own safety and leave the inspectors out of it.

This then raises the additional question of whether a dedicated box is sufficient to eliminate the need for the motor or whatever having a marine certification label.
