[Electric Boats] Re: REGEN SUCCESS!

 

Hi Mike,

Thanks for changing the video setting. You wrote; Did the happy dance in cockpit! I think I can hear the happy dance in your voice ;-).

When I first got my SolidNav Explorer the directions for regen (as I recall) where to put the forward/reverse switch in reverse and leave the throttle in the off position or maybe slightly on.

After the unit was installed I got an update on regen procedure and it was to set shifter to forward and apply a small amount of throttle.

In practice feathering the throttle to match prop freewheeling rpm (boat sailing speed) makes a sizable difference.

I have gone out for a two hour sail and returned with .02 volts more than I left with. Pretty minimal motoring, maybe ten minutes but still not too shabby.

Thanks! It certainly made my day especially since I was not expecting to see it. I wonder what I would have seen on the meter  if I had figured the regen out last year when I was sailing along like this:
I love the happy surprises having an electric propulsion system brings to the sailing experience.

I can see the video now. That's about what my meter looked like when sailing about the same speed. That's so cool, the first time you see it on your own boat.

I was not able to observe and extended look at the meter because I could not leave the helm for too long. But, hope to do so in the future when I have a meter in a better location near the helm.
BTW I have changed the settings for the video hopefully you and others can see it now.

I have found that electro-sailing is the key to regen on my boat too. I've never seen any positive amperage at under 5kts, but on a day this summer where we were sailing around 6kts most of the afternoon, I saw brief moments of 1A+ and 3 minute averages (by eyeball estimating) of about 0.3-0.4A It does help that I've got my E-Xpert Pro mounted where I can see it from the helm.

BTW, your regen video on the blog shows up as private, I can't watch it on this computer, I'll have to try another computer tonight.

Glad to hear the splash went well. Look forward to hearing your report once you finish your trials. One note of caution about the battery meter in the cockpit. The reason my amp meter is where it is now is because sunlight eventually ruined the LCD display and I had to replace it:
The Xantrex XBM manual said the display was "splash proof" but, never mentioned any thing about the sun. So I originally had it installed so was it visible from the helm but, moved it after I repaired it.

Great news.   

As you know, we splashed our Hylas 44 last week with the shiny new Thoosa 12000 onboard.  Very quiet run from the yard marina to our slip up the river.  Very calm day but she handled wonderfully. 

Still have to do some real testing but the plan is to test with the old prop first to compare data against the Yanmar diesel.  We will then switch the prop to a bigger diameter and re-test for "watts to knots" data.  

I plan to install a monitor in the cockpit so I can observe amp usage - and hopefully regen - more easily.

Hey Mike, welcome to the positive side! :o)

I normally will bump the throttles just off of nutraul. I also have the notch on my throttles and this is a negative draw. Play with it and see if you can get regen just a hair off neutral, don’t understand why the throttles can’t be linear and adjusted wit that position a stop. This gets the props to easy spin. I’m interested in something, didn’t the manufacture say anything about keeping the motors in the on position when sailing? I thought there could be some damage to the motors if switched off and turning the props/motor for an extended period of time.

I’m currently working on an Android application and instillation into a Xoom to remote read the PakTrakr from anywhere on the boat through a Bluetooth connection. It will also work on an Android phone.
