[Electric Boats] Subject: new electric install

Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2019 23:24:41 -0700

Steve,
My Farrier catamaran has electric drive systems from Electric Yacht in the
U.S.A. Decided to go electric when I built the boat; as I hate the smell of diesel. Installed 3 years ago.
Battery banks are 16 Lithium 700ahr. Thundersky/Winston. Purchased from
a California distributor who has now disappeared.
We have 2 Honda EU2000 generators to augment battery power. Allows
unlimited hours of motoring, as long as the gas supply is large enough!
Solar panels on the hardtop bimini will charge the batteries (slowly!) - only after I install them!😂. This winter's project.
Cruising on battery power alone only allows us about 6 hours at 5 knots..
Motoring with generators - we limit power to the motors at about 30 amps;
which keeps batteries at constant state of charge. The generator outputs are fed to the 110v chargers; then to the 48v. battery banks. We can motor only at 4.5 - 5 knots, which is slow for the boat design... but that's the trade-off
for electric boating.
We can generate power into the battery banks when sailing over about 6 knots. Most input we've had is 440 watts - but that was sailing at 15 knots!
If you're planning to install a diesel generator; you should size it so that you can motor at Hull speed if possible.. Diesel is a lot more efficient than battery
power.
We sailed from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta last fall. No real problems except
for a feathering prop that decided to leave the boat! Kinda difficult to maneuver with only one prop.😂
At the moment we have the 2 backup fixed 3 blade props installed. The
constant noise of the rotating props on the saildrives while sailing is a bit of a pain - but they are not as noisy as a Diesel engine or generator!
Good luck with your project - there's a huge learning curve for you, but there are many experienced electric yachties with as much information that you can absorb on Cruisers Forum. Beware of the trolls though, who have cast iron theories based on nothing except what they read. Get advice from people who have installed and currently (😁) use their electric systems.
You can't expect forum members to totally design your system; but all the
info. you need is on the forum - you just have to have patience and find it.
Cheers
Graham

Hello Steve,

We are in a very similar situation. Our boat is a Moody 425 (Monohull, 10to, 12,70 meter) which we want to convert.

Contacted Oceanvolt and got an indicative offer which nearly put us off the project.

After watching Kika & Dan from Sailing Uma we have decided to go ahead and our plans so far look like:

a 12kw 48 Volt DC Motor along the lines of the
https://www.thunderstruck-ev.com/electric-sailboat-kits-and-accessories-inboard-motor-ev/

48 Volt LiFePo4 Battery, build from single cells
https://evea-kartmasters.fr/en/lithium-cells/2130-gbs-32v-160ah-lifemnpo4-lithium-cell.html

a solar array of 800 - 1000 WP (maybe more)

a 4kva AC Genset (which was already installed by the PO)

The first step is to learn and decide what speed you want to be able to
do using your motor. If you reduce to 95% hull speed your motor needs
drop to 70%.

https://www.fischerpanda.de/calculating-the-performance-requirement-of-a-de-propulsion-unit-for-displacement-yachts.htm

And after that you need to figure out your range requirement, or if you
want to use a genset as range extender the size of the genset.

Further thoughts go to replacing the gas cooker with an induction stove
as the engine battery serves as a really big house bank when at
anchor....... and the tender already has a epropulsion outboard. No more
gas and no more outboard fuel reduce our ressources needed to diesel for
the genset if at all. With more solar and our windgen we may already not
need the genset. We will keep the diesel tank for heating purposes........

And most important for us: improve our sailing skills. The more you sail
the less you need a motor......

Rgds

Take a look at https://www.thunderstruck-ev.com/ for some options. The
price is a lot more reasonable than a lot of the other plug-n-play
options and I really like the idea of brushless water cooled DC motors
for long distance motoring.

Re: [Electric Boats] Greetings! New conversion

You should look at the boat that Sailing Uma sails.  It's a Pearson 37 outfitted with 48v LiFePO4 batteries, a fork lift motor and 500 watts of solar panels.  They are using this system with great success to cross oceans.  They are on Youtube.

Hello all!

It's been tough finding people with experience in EP with boats. Following cruisers forum, they are cynical and rude.

We recently purchased a FP Orana 44' and I have been looking at converting to electric. The boat currently has Volvo Penta 40hp engines that are getting pretty tired.

I've spoken with a few plug and play operations but want to learn and know more about the systems from current owners. I would love to chat with a few people through here or even better over the phone if possible.

Our plans.....we are nurses and plan to board the boat full time in less than 2 years. She's in the Caribbean now. We started a non profit and will start doing disaster and medical relief in the Caribbean for a couple years before crossing to Vanuatu in the South Pacific.

We are looking at a system with Genset to get the range we want.
So many questions. Anyways would love to connect and learn from you guys doing this first hand.

Thanks
