The only good reason to place them permanently in parallel is to keep Peukert losses down. This really is not much of an issue below a discharge rate of about C/20 for flooded lead acid batteries. At higher discharge current, say C/10 or above, it begins to be more of a thing. LiFePO4 and some other technologies don't have as much problem with Peukert Effect. If you have for instance three separate banks, 200ah 48v each, and you sometimes crank up the power to 40a, you are pulling C/5 from whichever bank you have online. If the three strings are in parallel, OTOH, you have a total capacity of 600ah and so your 40a draw represents only C/15, and Mr Peukert will be smiling.

With your series strings NOT wired in parallel, you have fewer potential problems and pack balancing is less critical, especially with lead batteries. Most lead users do not have any balancing scheme, they simply manage their bank manually or else they just hook up a 48v smart charger and put it out of their minds. Higher tech batteries should have a proper BMS, Battery Management System, ESPECIALLY with cells in parallel. YMMV, and yeah some will disagree. You will see a lot of vigorous arguments about batteries any time you raise the subject.

Myself, I prefer to not have any batteries in parallel. I don't mind being able to switch them into parallel when desired, though.

So what about your panels? Does each panel feed its own battery through a separate charge controller? If so, yeah you should, IMHO, have some plan for balancing the batteries. You will have masts, antennae, and other things shading the panels so that their output is unequal.

I am just in the planning stage at this point but a light cat build with somewhere between 2400 watts and 3000 watts seems doable with the quality of solar coming on stream now and in the next year or three. 
 My usage will primarily be cruising inland waters canals etc so lots of continuous no wake zones.

The draw from one or even if I wind up with two ray marine outboards  or another brand( I haven't made final decision it will be a matter of what's available at the right price at the time) at the low cruising speeds will often be less than the solar output or just under.

So my thinking is a bit different than many on here.  I think my battery bank will spend most of its life topped up.

What is the better battery for these conditions?

I think it depends somewhat on the size of your motor compared to the AH capacity of your batteries. If you use 3 switchable banks, the Peukert losses will be greater, but you'll have fewer problems with balancing. You'll also have a system with built-in reserve.

If you have a large motor and small capacity batteries, Peukert losses are significant, so the parallel configuration will give much better performance than three switchable pairs.

The voltage from the panels needs to be higher than the battery to push a charge into the battery. 
 If you have that much current from your solar and it matches you motor I suspect your motor may be a little small for the load?  What are you trying to do.

[Electric Boats] E repower Hunter 450 Passage

 

Hello Everyone,

 

I own a Hunter 450 Passage with 8kw Kohler 220v AC Genset and Yanmar 4JH2 HTE engine. The engine is water damaged so I am thinking electric conversion. 

 

The engine is 75 HP with the boat weight of 10000kg (its a 45ft boat). I think that 40-50 hp diesel engine would be enough to get it to the 7-8 knots.

 

I also have two 90w solar panels and 8 Trojan 6v T105 225AH batteries.

 

What would be the best solution to repower?

Also are there controllers which can take 12v from the batteries as well as 220v AC from the genset to create a hybrid propulsion?


Some additional info:


1. I am located in Hong Kong. It is very difficult to replace the engine here. It is very expensive and majority of mechanics are not reliable. 

2. The boat will be used for coastal sailing. So most of the time the engine will be running only to get to my mooring and out. This is about 5 mins at 10% power or so.

3. I understand that 40hp diesel engine is about 20hp electric engine bcz of alternator, pumps etc loads. Please correct me if I am wrong.

4. 8kw coming out of my genset will give me 6-7 knots in calm conditions.

[Electric Boats] Hunter 450 Passage E-convertion

 

Hello Everyone,


I own a Hunter 450 Passage with 8kw Kohler 220v AC Genset and Yanmar 4JH2 HTE engine. The engine is water damaged so I am thinking electric conversion. 


The engine is 75 HP with the boat weight of 10000kg (its a 45ft boat). I think that 50-60 hp would be enough to get it to the 7-8 knots.
