Re: [Electric Boats] Feasible to change to 6v golf cart batteries?

 

They would all be in a series. One battery charger. Same as a golf cart.


 

I recently bought a 2002 Canadian electric boat Fantail Launch.  It has 36v system, with two groups of three 12v batteries in series, then the two groups linked in parallel.  There are two ProTournament series 3-step marine battery chargers, each dedicated to one of the 3-battery groups.

I fear the current six 12 v Interstate batteries are approaching end of life, and I'm interested in changing over to the 6v golf cart batteries with the higher amp hours capacity.

I need a 36 volt system for the current motor.  So, would I be linking 12 of the 6v batteries: two series of 6 in parallel?  Would I need two more charges to charge the added 6 batteries?

[Electric Boats] Re: My new saildrive update or final numbers

 

Great job Dan! What's amazing is how quickly you pulled it together despite being busy at work. I still can't get over how you can get around at 3 mph using only 10 amps. That's wild! With those group 27 batteries, you can go for a long, long time.

I'm really looking forward to some video. Congrats Dan.

[Electric Boats] My new saildrive update or final numbers

 

I have been on the water for a couple of weeks now. All electric components are operating. I will try and take some video this weekend. 

Summary: Suzuki 9.9 lower unit mounted to the hull on a Chrysler C26 sailboat. Kelly 60v AC Induction motor. Kelly controller. Kelly 60v charger. Kelly 60v to 12v converter. Aimes 12v to 120v AC 2000 w pure sine wave inverter. 5 group 27 Exide deep cell batteries. 1 group 30 Exide DCB. 

All of the house electricity is 110v. I have a compact fridge, 110v. The running lights are 12v LED as well as the house water pump and bilge pump.

The inverter has an automatic switch that disconnects the inverter when it is plugged into shore power or a generator. The 5 60v batteries feed the 1 12v via the converter, keeping it full. I charge the 60v pack at the same time I charge the 12v battery. The generator runs about 1/3 power. Next year solar. 

The motor is more than enough to power the boat. Power is available to motor sail at a moment's notice. 

Top speed is 6 mph GPS, 100 amps
Cruise speed is 4 mph 20 amps
Sweet spot is 3 mph 10 amps

I haven't had the batteries lower than 65% even running the frig and cruising around. The generator would if I choose run all day on a tank of gas keeping me going even if I ran the motor all day. I plan on getting a 1000w smaller generator. 

Boat sits level and has no noticeable effects of the batteries. Once you get over drilling a hole in the bottom of your boat, it is a great conversion from an outboard. As I said I have way more power than I need. If I had a longer boat I could go faster.

I have a golf cart motor 3.75 Kw which has a shaft all ready modified to connect directly or via a gearbox to the prop shaft. I also have a Curtis controller. I will sell them together or separately. I'm in N.Florida. $1200 both or $900 and $300. Thank you.

[Electric Boats] Re: Best High Precision, Low Speed Android GPS Speedometer?

 

I have the Wahoo RFLKT bike computer. I plan on using it for my boat. It is small, connects to a smartphone via bluetooth, and has lots of features and functions. It is water proof. I'll mount it where I can see it, keeping the smartphone tucked away.

Re: [Electric Boats] Gonna Try Direct Drive.

 

I can certainly second that comment about James from Electroprop. I just started my 4th season with my PM-20 setup (one of his older offerings using an ME0913 coupled to a browning helical gear and sevcon gen4 controller. Once launched, I turned the key and quietly left the service dock behind. 3 years in and I still have nothing but good things to say about my conversion and James' guidance through the whole process. 

This community is fortunate to have vendors like him and Mike (ElectricYacht) being such active contributors and taking the time to help even those that aren't ready to buy. My boat was a good multi-year sales cycle. The sales process starts long before the purchasing does. The vendors here get that.

After much investigation & pricing, I decided to purchase a browning in line single stage helical gear drive. Final ratio works out to 1.75-1.
I looked looked at Baldor & Nord, Browning was a few bucks cheaper.

Also talked with James at Electroprop last week. What a knowledgeable man he is. Anyone out there that has the cash to pay full boat for a system would not go wrong doing business with him.

Once I get the install complete I'll post a couple of pictures.
