Somebody is dreaming again, and somebody else is trying to steal vast amounts of money from the public selling the overpriced pontoon boats.  Just my opinion...

Absolutely would love to see it on a cruising power cat even. My dream is a solar power cat and the only way I see it having enough solar space is in a power catamaran.

[Electric Boats] Practical Sailor - Electric Propulsion

 

I sent the following email to Practical Sailor.  If you know the publication, you know that they do not do any advertisement and function as an independent reviewer of products in the marine industry.  I think it would be helpful for the sailing community to understand what we as individual sailors are doing.

"would you consider doing an article on electric propulsion for displacement keel boats.  In the US, I suspect over 10% of all "new" motors being installed to replace dead or dying gas or diesel engines in sailboats from 27 to 40ft are  electric.  I estimate that number at over 300 motors this year and growing.  This is from my anecdotal questioning of companies selling inboard electrical propulsion and the limited information available from the few diesel manufacturers.
The electrical marine propulsion companies in the US are in alphabetical order: Annapolis Hybrid Marine (Thoosa), Elco, Electoprop, Electric Yacht, GreenStar (new to the US), MasterVolt, and Torqeedo... also DIY kits being offered these include Thunderstruck, and Electric Motor Sport. Finally there are those who just build their own."

[Electric Boats] electric cats

 

I'm thinking of trying to purchase a 38 ft. - 45 ft. cruising catamaran and convert it to all electric (or hybrid if necessary)  and am looking for suggestions or concerns.  I am particularly interested in expected conversion costs and the types of power sources one might use.

Andy,
I really have to agree that re-powering of 13' whaler is a great option to show mainstream capabilities to the market.  

1. It is a hugely popular boat and on most of the older model, the 4 stroke 40HP re-powering options are really too heavy for the back of the boat.  They mess up the balance of the older boat designed for 2 stroke outboard. 

2. Many people have opted for a 25hp or added a 12 gal tank (approximately 100 lb) under the front seat to help the balance.  this would also be a good place for your battery because it would open the area behind the drivers seat for someone to stand and fish which has always been a complaint when having two fisherman on board. This could also be cost justified by eliminating the need for a separate trolling motor. 

3.Many of these boats become a grand kids first boat and I believe you would find that parents and grandparents really appreciating the idea of not having the grand kids messing around with gas engine or the ongoing maintenance.  

4.  If you can offer do it yourself re-power instructions and a complete re-power kit including a forward seat that covers your battery, I think you may find a very fertile market. 

As a retired marketing guy and a fan of the potential for electric boats I hope you succeed.
