You may know this but Torqeedo did drop the 801 and replace it with the 1003 because of some battery problems.  See link below.   I think they were making deals to switch out the 801 in a lot of cases.  Maybe you can call the Chicago US headquarters and see if they will help you out as an option.  See http://www.torqeedo.com/en/service-centre/hints-and-returns.html
They helped me out with my 8hp Cruise

My local dealer told me the 801 was a real problem for them and they were getting a lot back.   You might find an old battery at your local Torqeedo dealer or just tell them your dilemma.  Most of the dealers carry other products so if one is close to you, they may be more open to giving you a copy of the wiring diagram from their shop manual.  Or maybe they have an old battery you can take apart.

Call Mouser Electronics and describe it to a tech.  That is what I do, and I have had 100% satisfaction in getting the right mates.  As for the wiring pin out, Personally I would try to back trace the wires and try to identify them.  That is, if Torqeedo tech support was no willing to comply.

Hello,

Just purchased a used Torqeedo Travel 801 which has no battery.  Can someone who owns one please help me identify the 6 pin connector to battery and which contacts carry +/- 24 v.  Torqeedo could not afford to label these for us or maybe they'd rather we didn't mess with it.  I can't find a battery for this so I need to build my own connector and hook up my own.

Andy,

   Another application is maybe for dinghy motors.  I realize torquedo is already there, but I don't think that theirs will push a 12 foot rigid inflatable up on a plane for any appreciable length of time.  With all the ethanol problems in the smaller motors, I for one would like to skip all that and go electric.  For example, I have a property on an island that I use four times/year.  To get to town it is about a 1.5 mile dinghy ride.  So range is not that big a deal, although more would be nice.  The big thing is that since the motor only gets used when I'm on the island, unless I'm very diligent about laying it up properly between trips I'm bound to have a problem.

Excited about what you are building.  My advice?  If you are going to use the boat as a test/demonstration boat, you should get a boat that is more common in the market and would provide the most representative model for the market.  If you are looking at 20kW outboard, I would want to know how it pushes a 13ft Boston Whaler which is a well know and popular boat which is often powered by motors from 9.9hp to 40hp.  That would be a great demo boat to use in order for the market understand the capabilities of the motor. 

I also want to understand the 20kW continuous.  Does it have a higher rating for short bursts?  What is the voltage of the motor?  The 1500 RPM is good.  The special propeller also is of interest.  We know of other electric outboards that over compare their capabilities because in a controlled test their special propeller will perform better than what would be a real world usage.

Outboards are rated at the propeller (thrust) which is vastly different than what inboards are rated.  A 35 hp diesel (break hp) is actually about 28shp (shaft hp).  That is what we all expect.  My question is will your 20kW electric outboard therefore would likely be more comparable to a 28hp outboard (20000w / 746).  Very impressive and I believe there is a market for such a quiet powerful motor.  I would also think that a motor that would provide the thrust of a 9.9hp outboard would be even more popular.

What is the proposed kWh capacity of the batteries, and cost/kWh of same ?

Andy,
This hull would seem to show the benefits of the motor you are developing.  It's not a production boat, but is easily driven and does not need to be on the plane to perform well.  And it's for sale cheap.  Please let this group know more as you can.  We "probably" would not steal any ideas.

My company just finished the engineering prototype of our 20 kW (continuous) outboard motor. This isn't a conversion; it's a new development, with no seawater loop, and a very small upper unit (far smaller than any gas outboard). It runs at 1500 RPM with a large custom prop, so its efficiency is high, and it provides the propulsion of a 35 HP gas outboard. 


The battery packs weigh just under 100 lbs and contain 6 kWh each of li-ion batteries. These packs can be combined (working in parallel) to reach higher battery capacity for longer range.


One question I have for this group is: what hull do you think would best show the capabilities of this system, and the benefit of clean, quiet power? We're currently using a hull that rowing coaches normally use, but that's not mainstream.

35-40 foot sailboat? Maybe up to 45? That is, if the shaft is long enough. Otherwise a big dinghy, small whaler, maybe a bass boat. I think the sailboat would be impressive since a fairly large boat will approach hull speed with that much power. My Cal 2-27 and a 5kw motor gets up to about 70% of hull speed.

A McGregor 26 and a pair of water skis? The McG would push dead easy in calm water at 3-4 kts, for a range demonstration. But you could POSSIBLY get it up out of the hole and demonstrate some speed. Worth looking into. Of course nay-sayers would point out that a McGregor 26 is not much of a boat.
