Make sure your controller is rated for the voltage output of your 230W panel. Most panels that size are a nominal 30Volts so if you're controlling down to a 12V system you need to make sure your controller will accept the higher voltage input if it's set up for 12V. There are small controllers that will do this but they are usually more expensive and often specially built for the large stepdown. Genasun makes a very good unit but they are proud of them.

[Electric Boats] new member

 

Thank you Myles for inviting me to join the group.

About 10 years ago I started to build a 35' steel sailboat, a Wylo II of 14,000 lbs. displacement.

I looked forward to buying and installing a sturdy diesel. Five years ago I bought a 3 cyl. 23 hp. Izuzu, lifted it in , installed the shaft and lined it up.. When it came time to hook up fuel filters, water separators, a lift pump, hot wet exhaust, etc. etc., I wanted to make it perfect, but  knew I probably couldn't and so I left the installation and went on to other things.

Then I discovered electric propulsion  and went out and bought a Thoosa 9,000 and installed it and a bank of 4 Odyssey PC 1800 FT, 214Ah batteries.

I just launched the boat last month and only have experience of motoring around the marina.

I am impressed and so are many other people. The big question for most people is "But how far can you motor?".. I admit, it's a bit of a question for me too.

The boat's name is Saltarelle and I'll open an album and post some photos.

Very much  looking forward to sharing experiences.

Hi Andy,

Sounds as though you've identified a need and are filling it! Low weight and high torque and good motor cooling in a reliable mechanical package and you'll have a winner, IMO!

Are you gearing/propping the outboard for pushing or high-speed planing? Long shaft?

If you have two of them as pushers, my vote would be for a medium-sized (e.g., 10m) cruising catamaran, and an exposed transom-mounting would be preferable to show off the unit. With a cat you'll have plenty of room for clients to view the motors in operation, get decent performance if the cat is slippery, and show off the silent docking ease with two motors.

Are you running off 48v or something higher? AC or DC SepEx with regen capability for sailboats?

I am a custom boat builder and design engineer.  Albeit a bit newer in the EB world, boating engineering has not changed since Noah (Not the Hollywood version ;-))))

My company just finished the engineering prototype of our 20 kW (continuous) outboard motor. This isn't a conversion; it's a new development, with no seawater loop, and a very small upper unit (far smaller than any gas outboard). It runs at 1500 RPM with a large custom prop, so its efficiency is high, and it provides the propulsion of a 35 HP gas outboard. 


The battery packs weigh just under 100 lbs and contain 6 kWh each of li-ion batteries. These packs can be combined (working in parallel) to reach higher battery capacity for longer range.


One question I have for this group is: what hull do you think would best show the capabilities of this system, and the benefit of clean, quiet power? We're currently using a hull that rowing coaches normally use, but that's not mainstream.

[Electric Boats] Northstar Batteries for sale

 

I still have 5 of the original 12 Pack of the Northstar NSB 210. These are less than 1 year old and 3 are less than 6 months. I'm going LiFePo4 this winter. New they retail for $800. Get them in Solomons MD for $300 ea.
