I get it, April fool's, right?
It's amazing how quickly cars transitioned from oil to solar after the World Solar Challenges started in 1987. I'm sure that the boating world will convert just as quickly.
All kidding aside, while these programs are critical for the experimental development of new technologies, the problem is very narrowly defined and the solutions are very specialized. It may take decades before any advancements found here will trickle down to a small segment of the recreational or commercial boating world.

[Electric Boats] Re: solar cup
[Electric Boats] Hello All!
Just wanted to introduce myself. I live and sail in WA and currently working on an electric sailboat project.
Creating a spreadsheet that calculates electrical needs to figure alternative power options so we can decide if we will be able repower with an electric motor or hybrid. ?? Crazy complicated. Going cross-eyed.
Thought this might be a good place for ideas/suggestions, the like.
Good to meet you all!

[Electric Boats] Re: Solidnav on ebay
Looks like a good price for a cosmetic "scratch and dent" item.

[Electric Boats] solar cup
Being new to the world of electric boats I was suprised when a fellow asked me to supply a prop for the "solar cup" in california. http://www.mwdh2o.
Or simply google solar cup look at the video. I believe that here is the future of electric boats. Give these kids a few years and the diesel will be used only for mooring weights.

I don't know anything about this motor but it looks like a good price if it's not too damaged.

[Electric Boats] Re: buying a Torqeedo 1003
Hi
I am thinking about getting a 1003 for my 28 foot sailboat. Just for getting out of the harbor and back in again. There is a little test of a pre-production model on a little boat: http://www.horsbord
There you can compare max speeds. Which don't seem to differ very much for the boat in question.

> I have never ridden in a portaboat but I would guess if a 2 or 3 hp gas outboard would move it then the 1003 would do just as well. You need to consider if you just want to use it for short hops or if you plan to be out all day in it (in which case you would need more batteries or some way of recharging it). I plan on using it as a light auxillary on my 17 foot Montogomery sailboat.

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Prius Motor
Nicholas,
Hello AllHas anybody tried using a Prius motor and inverter to drive a boat?Prius inverters are available on Ebay U.S. for about $650 and they handle a lot of powerI have not seen M1 and M2 (the electric motors from a prius) being sold separatelyBut there is a complete power train on Ebay at the moment for $2k and this would contain M1 and M2and comes with the invertorLooking at photo's of the inverter and motors on various sites , they sure are built to last!Nick
