RE: [Electric Boats] B2G TECHNOLOGY: IS THAR GOLD IN THEM THAR HULLS?

 

On the topic of sending power back to the grid, there’s a micro-grid-tie-inverter out there now (~$200) that is good to around 200watts.

This would be a perfect size for many boats to send power back to the grid----assuming they can spin their meter backwards…

I've had thoughts along similar lines, but not quite the same...

 

Around the marina's I've been on I notice the same thing - hundreds of boats not being used.  No only are they not being used but the majority are plugged into the grid while at the same time bristling with solar panels and wind generators doing nothing.

 

Chances are there's enough generating capacity in all those unused solar cells and wind generators to power the whole marina - if only the power could flow in reverse and back into the grid.  The technology is already used for house solar - I'm sure it could be easily adapted for marina use.

 

A small first step would be for marinas to bill separately for power usage rather than including that service as part of berthing charges.  Then there would be some economic incentive for boaters to at least rely on their own on-board power.

 

When you combine this generating capacity together with the storage capacity you refer to, it could be an even more useful resource.

Sorry about this but I guess I need to reply to all John's lies, the only info I asked his customer about was to obtain 8 mounting bolts for me as they were not available in the Islands, as for the photographs some here with attached I sent them to him emediately and his take on that was he could not see them.

It would surprise me none if the used motors was not the same that was returned from his customer who offered them to me at a lower price which I did not accept. As for the postal services in the azores they examined the parcels and could not find any parcel dammage except for their comment that the packaging was not up to standard for what they were ment for. The motor cost is $549 and his insurance value on the shipping is only $220 each so even if there was a ligitiment claim which was not the case I would have been out of pocket. John has been ducking the issue now for 5 months with E/Mails and threats and I have decided a while ago to no longer deal with his underhanded way of doing bussiness and will leave South Africa in May to the US to buy what I need to finnish my instalation and then on to the Azores to complete same, I am not trying to get something for nothing all I want is to be treated fair, my instalation budget is +- $12,000.00 and if I can find another supplier for the Mars 0709 motor or simular which my fabrication is based on I will purchase one.

Hi George,
The motors I made mention of, are in fact PM brush motors, they are rated 130V DC and 18.5 amps, 6750 rpm. Using a router speed control and a full wave bridge rectifier I can use batteries or grid power.

The inverters give a one step increase 12vdc up to 120vac modified sine wave, 5,000watt cont. and a peak of 10,000watts for a few seconds.

I have used a stepup transformer, 5000 watt, to deliver 240vac with about 21 amps to drive a Delta 2HP planer motor. (220vac 18amps 3450rpm).
I dabble and tinker quite a bit so I tend to mix and match things a lot, moving parts and pieces around I seem to never keep any one project in a complete and functioning group.
I do enjoy dreaming and scheming :))

I think the treadmill motor is actually a brushless DC motor, so there is no need for an inverter to turn DC from the battery into AC.  The batteries can be connected to the power source. I am now googling my way through a ton of site swith "arduino ev" trying to see who has already invented this wheel.

Not knowing the size of the boat you plan, I will throw out a guess that you can handle around 300 pounds of batteries, consider a 2500 -5000 watt inverter that works on 12 or 24 volts and steps up to 120 volts, using a bridge rectifier you can find treadmill motors up to 2 and 3 HP and a 15-50 dollar router type speed control, you will need a reduction of around 3-5:1 which gives a final list of parts that can very quickly be removed and used in other places (if you are someone that likes to tinker).

The batteries you have to have in any case, the other parts depending on wattage can range from 300 dollars on up. The fact that they can be used in other things is what makes this look good to me.
