I'm a SF bay boater based in San Leandro.  Just received my electric motor assembly from ElectricYacht.  Will be installing it this winter in my Pearson 35.  I also can't make it to your Monday meeting, but please keep me posted on any developments.

Hi Russ,

Good to know of another SF boater - so far myself, Hans, Mark, Kevin (Arby's motor) and the guy with LION whose name escapes me is all I can confirm. There's another fellow - a pioneer with a Rawson 30 named Steve but I don't think he frequents the group. I've heard of 2 or 3 other boats - including one right next to mine in Brisbane but I've never been able to contact the owner.

I won't be able to make it either being a workday, but would be interested to hear the outcome.

This looks like the kiss of death for my electric cat. If these guys are telling me I need a ton of lithium iron phosphate batteries (per motor), I can only imagine what conventional lead acid batteries would weigh. I could go diesel electric but just one electric motor costs more than two 20 Hp 4-stroke outboards, to say nothing of the diesel generator....
 
I may still go with the lithium iron phosphate batteries and 315 W solar panels, though. That should give me much better reserve power for all my electrical equipment and better recharging as well. I hope I never need the outboards but if I do, I want them to have enough thrust to push my boat into a gale, navigate a rip current, maneuver quickly with a 400 Lb marlin in the line or take me to the next port in calm winds. I'm looking for a minimum of 500 mile range and I'll bet less that 100 gallons of fuel will get me that with the outboards.
 
Thanks for the help. Nothing would have made me happier than to do this with 100% electric but that time hasn't come yet, I guess.

Mark Stafford here appreciating your summary. I need clarification of your last sentence: "There is a major market for electric propulsion but it just does not include boats out in the oceans or islands." I think you were refering to battery-electric propulsion, as opposed to diesel-electric propulsion. Battery-electric propulsion is extremely reliable but measured in minutes. Diesel-electric (diesel motor driving generator driving propulsion electric motor) wins the distance and efficiency calculations, though is more expensive than diesel only propulsion. On a properly engineered system, the losses of diesel-generator-electric are less than the throttle (wave and poor RPM) losses on straight diesel systems. Kooky, eh?

Hei Bill

I don't have an electric system myself, but much like you I am also dreaming of installing one on a sailboat. There is a couple of providers which might be interesting for you checking out. One is the often mentioned Bellmann (www.bellmann.nu) which has recently been taken over by mastervolt. They sell all kinds of systems (pods, saildrives and conventional shaft drives) and all kinds of sizes. Under the roof of mastervolt they are probably able to provide "the most complete system" including batteries, chargers etc.
Another interesting link for you might be www.e-jet.org. Although they are not in the marked yet, they might be some day. And the pictures they have of a yacht look quite nice though it is only a monohull http://picasaweb.google.com/Bieschewski/EJETAdaptionAnSegelyachtAusfahrUndDrehbar# I don't have any clue how efficient it is. Somewhere on their website they also claim to be working on regeneration... I like this alternative since it is easily retractable and includes very few moving parts. However, I am not sure if it is going to be available soon.
In any case I believe you will need a powerful generator to drive the electric engines, but thats only one ICE instead of two and you will be able to efficiently use it to power all the rest of your electric equipment while charging the battery bank independent of propulsion. On a sunny, windy day you then might end up running the generator very little ;-)
