Yeah I guess that year is busted too, which is why I was originally going to do it in June, but as with all things marine, stuff goes wrong. I guess 2021 I'll try again.

It appears that the locks will be closed July 1, 2020 through October 31, 2020.

Re: [electricboats] 1900+ km in a Solar Electric Powered, Side Wheel Paddle Boat

Thanks for the kind words, but no, not even close to a record - even for the Murray River trip!

Some of the inspiration for our trip came from the 2 voyages made in the 1990's by Sunboat I and Sunboat II from Prince Alfred College in Adelaide. See http://www.solarnavigator.net/prince_alfred_college_adelaide.htm.

I believe the dollar cost (without any equalising for inflation) of River Snail was something less than 10% of that of Sunboat II, reflecting the reduced costs of solar panels and electrics in the intervening 20+ years, as well as the somewhat more "agricultural" construction of RIver Snail.

I believe the Mundoo 3 Solar Electric (https://www.storerboatplans.com/boat/motorboats/electricsolar-power/example-of-solar-electric-real-world-use-liveaboard-boat-and-cartop-canoe/
and www.woodenboat.com/library-content/185.woodenboat-issue.pdf ) has also cruised much of the Murray.

About the only claim we can make is that we are perhaps the first solar electric paddle wheeler to make the journey!

But it was a lot of fun...

Re: [electricboats] 1900+ km in a Solar Electric Powered, Side Wheel Paddle Boat

A fellow named Jim Greer did the Great Loop in a boat called the Ra that was 100% solar and that's about a 7000 mile trip. They didn't even carry a generator or a gas outboard for backup. Just raw solar power moving them as fast as the sun shined. It took him a couple years to do the whole thing and he lapped the east coast a couple times too.

G'day All:

I was reminded that I had been a member of this group when I saw the notification of the move to groups.io.

I had browsed the original Yahoo group a while back when contemplating building a solar boat.

We did build "River Snail (notopala solaris)" and I can report that we cruised her successfully down the navigable length of the Australia's Murray River during November / December 2017, a distance of just over 1900km taking us 6 weeks, completely under solar power.

If anyone is interested, further details are available in the blog at www.riversnail.wordpress.com.

Have fun,

Dave

Re: [electricboats] [Electric Boats] Re: Good news: the EBA will support the migration to Io .

I understand the problems some people have with Facebook Groups and membership (I have to use it anyway).  I have had different but even stronger bad opinions about Yahoo and have been unable to post for years when I cancelled the yahoo email account I was forced to use to join this group.  As someone who has had similar cancellation problems with a forum I initiated, I congratulate the great idea of moving this group over here.  Too bad a solution like this won't work for the forum we have at boatsinthebelfry.com    As someone who has only done some E.B. research for videos, I don't have a lot to offer except maybe some of the historical references I found.  But, a few topic suggestions might be "Government labs solved the lithium ion over heating and fire problem while increasing power output by 1/3."   Was this an urban myth, a cover-up or "fake news I read almost 2 years ago?"  I seem to recall they planned to test the new batteries in defense projects, then maybe, let the tech trickle down to somebody.  Obviously it hasn't trickled to Tesla Inc.   Will the new movie re-kindle interest in electric alternatives?      https://youtu.be/kue18AxK1tU

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Good news: the EBA will support the migration to Io .

Hi Electric Boats group,

RE: monetizing

I've been picking up on some of the discussions about migrating the group and agree that facebook is problematic and
I've just spent a few minutes on the Groups.io site and agree it would be a better option.   I've been a bit too busy this year to do ahead with
the electric conversion of my 1974 Dufour 35 sailboat but I have already learned a lot from the wealth of knowledge and experience shared in this group
and hope to comb through the archives when I am ready to do my conversion.

In response to Rob's questions about monetizing the group, my company would be interested to become a sponsor if the group decides
to go the sponsorship route.  I am involved in a startup in Berlin Germany that is launching some products for the marine market including some
portable lithium batteries for running trolling motors on small boats that will have good performance, safety and be affordable. (www.bronson-energy.com)   We are close to the launch date
and will need to get more focused on marketing so its a good time for us to think about this.  As a  startup we don't have huge troves of cash to throw around
but I think it would be well spent marketing budget for us to be involved in a group like this.

reach out to me if you decide on a sponsorship scheme,   martin@bronson-energy.com
best regards,
Martin

Thanks, Barci9999.

In fact, in view of all the back and forth on this discussion area on what would be done about the site shutdown, I joined the Electric Boat Association as a paying member last week.
The EBA presently only has a handful or two of members in the U.S., but I liked the idea of joining an international organization, and I felt there was at least a chance that some other ElectricBoats group members would make the same decision.
I'm still working on my conversion project, and so look forward to exchanging information with everyone in the near future.

UPDATE ON MIGRATION TO GROUPS.io

There are 800 groups ahead of us in the migration queue, it seems to move at roughly 100 per day – obviously that is dependent on the size of the groups, etc.

So I am figuring that it will take about a week before I get the email saying all has been completed.

Yahoo Groups - Upcoming Product Changes to Yahoo Groups

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Good news: the EBA will support the migration to Io .

I just went through this with the Atkin Boats group. With over 900
groups ahead of you, and some behind you willing to pay a couple of C
notes to jump the queue, it'll take at least a couple of weeks for the
migration to be completed. Be patient.

BTW, I recently bought a little keel sailboat with an interesting
auxiliary drive -- a 24 volt trolling motor of the type that's supposed
to be bolted to the "cavitation" plate of a giant outboard, but it's
bolted to the side of the keel. So, I'll probably be participating more
here after the dust settles...
